From what I heard from one of the officials at the station, they’re having to mill the parts to replace the broken mechanisms. Rather than buy all new escalators, but I guess we see how that turned out with the new orange line cars…

Yep, they don't even let them turn into stairs, just put up barriers that partially block the actual stairs.

The other super frustrating thing is that one will work for like 2 days, then it's right back to broken. Somebody must have one hell of a repair contract that they just milk for decades. Either that or South Station happens to have the absolute most complicated two escalators in existence since they can't seem to keep them running.
