If you enjoy completely unseasoned seafood and live in Dedham, this is exciting.

I live within walking distance. I have never been to a Kelly's. I don't intend to start now.

I’d imagine there is a correlation between those two things

Downvote if you want but if a place embodied a jar of mayonnaise it might be Dedham lol

The Revere Beach location is/was the only objectively "good" location. Every other store is mediocre at best. Definitely not worth the prices they charge now.

Bro thank you. People need to get over the fact that they're a big old chain. It's a really good beef! And this coming from someone who grew up on the north shore and only wants a classic 3-way.

Sometimes the big touristy things are actually still good after all!

Can’t speak to their burgers or fries, but objectively, their super beef isn’t a super beef. Over toasted sesame bun? Nope. Onion roll or bust for a super beef. I also find Kelly’s beef to be over cooked more often than not.

Tessie’s in Tewksbury, Royal Roast Beef in Methuen, Jillie’s in Lowell, Simard’s in Wilmington, and Geo’s in Amesbury, just to name a few that have superior super beefs to Kelly’s.

i can. the burger and fries are excellent.

While I wholeheartedly agree with this, there are some exceptions. When I went to the one that used to be in Allston and asked for a Super beef with just sauce he asked "what kind of sauce". It ended up coming with au jus on the side. That place deserved to close.

It depends if they're going to train their employees to make Kelly's food or just let any old dipshits use the Kelly's name. Seems like some do and some dont.

No, there roast beef is objectively bad. Like try any other roast beef spot and it’s better than Kelly’s.

When I moved nearby I tried out the one in Medford, my first experience with the chain. I spent like $40 on getting a bunch of items and didn't eat more than two bites out of any of them before throwing it all away, walking out, and never stepping foot in them again. At that point I had not heard anyone else's negative opinion of the place to bias me in that direction

imsooooooooooooogay t1_jd4dgq0 wrote

Yeah I agree, they have good roast beef. They also had a roast beef/lobster roll combo that was reasonably priced I always enjoyed, not sure if hey still do.

For fried seafood I do like a lot of the other places better

cruzweb t1_jd4oqqg wrote

I only moved here last year, didn't really know if it was a chain or what it was. Or if it was popular. So I hold no bias. Went to the Medford one because it was near Wellington and I'd always see it on my commute home.

I felt like it was pretty expensive and underwhelming for what it is. Like, it's fine, but it didn't strike me as worth it.

I have had 3 meals at Kelly's in the last year because a coworker is convinced its "the best" Its over priced and calling it mediocre would be a compliment. I got a cheeseburger medium w/fries the last time. Burger was welllll done and tasteless the fries were under cooked smelled and tasted like fish because they didn't use a separate fryer for just fries. The other 2 times its was just as bland and meh. Much better options available

mc0079 t1_jd4hfqd wrote

It become a thing with all these Roast Beef Instagram accounts. Kelly's using big slices of beef, not that chopped up shit most northshore beef places use.

tagsb t1_jd6z7um wrote

Good portions is all they have going for them, but I can get that for cheaper at fast food places. It's fine quality wise but it takes forever for a drive-thru and is expensive af. It's not fast, not cheap, and only okay quality. Extremely overrated

i just wish they'd go back to their pre-covid hours. it sucks going home from a show around midnight and they're closed when they used to be open until 3am before that. (or at least medford was)

When I moved to Boston 8 years ago I really wanted to like Kelly’s. I love roast beef and always heard they were the best. I gave them about 5 chances, trying a couple different locations. I was disappointed every time. I don’t plan on ever eating at one again.

[deleted] t1_jd2fd5u wrote

Will never understand how their drive through draws a huge line, especially the locations north of the city like Medford and Saugus that have way better beef close by.

wet_cupcake t1_jd2o89t wrote

Gotta go to a true beefery. Kelly’s was once one. Many many years ago.

I’ve only eaten at Kelly’s at the airport, and for airport food it isn’t half bad.

fadetoblack237 t1_jd1pb2m wrote

We already have a Brothers Roast Beef in Dedham which is… ok. How does Kelly’s compare?

2

wet_cupcake t1_jd2of98 wrote

You can go to Stoppies. Buy some roast beef cold cuts and some cheese. Warm up the beef in the microwave. There it is. Kelly’s is lazy. Not a good beefery.

They are a north shore thing. Sullivans would have made more sense...than the one in a parking lot in hanover.

SparkDBowles t1_jd2nb65 wrote

I don’t get the fascination w Sullivan’s. It’s just hotdogs. Nothing special.

1

thewhaler t1_jd2njhh wrote

It's all about the location

4

SparkDBowles t1_jd3dmbe wrote

It really is. It’s just plain old hotdogs. The fried seafood and French fries are decent, though.

2

thewhaler t1_jd3dshy wrote

The prices aren't bad too, compared to like a woodman's.

1

Mumbles76 t1_jd37gyk wrote

Yeah there's some truth in that. Though Sullivans doesn't do Roast Beef sandwiches. That's really what i'm after.
