I think people slow down because they believe they can get ticketed for speeding. I actually try to accelerate faster :)

I don’t think speed cameras are even legal in Massachusetts. Accelerate away! I do, too, when there aren’t a bunch of idiots slowing to a crawl at the plazas.

They definitely aren't!

A few years ago I was driving up to Boston on July 4th and there was no one else on the road except some jackass in a Nissan SUV with NY plates who would accelerate to 90 whenever I tried to pass and then SLAM on the brakes every time he saw a toll transponder. At least he was predictable, as far as brake checks go.

Photo enforcement is not legal in mass EXCEPT for ezpass enforcement.

I think it’s allowed by local ordinances. Wasn’t Salem going to install red light cameras? It’s certainly not allowed on state roads.

If you blow through the low-speed EZPass ones in other places that haven't gotten rid of their old style toll plazas at a decent speed, you may get letters from EZPass threatening to revoke your account.

I’ve been told by a guy at massdot that they do collect speed information, but it’s for traffic purposes only. Basically they time how long cars take to get from one toll camera to another, which can pin a speed to a specific license plane, but they don’t keep a record of the license plate numbers after the calculation.

You don't have to slow down for anything on the pike. Not traffic, not emergency services, full send baby!

groovy-bears t1_iu7u6rg wrote

even if you slow down they still know you were speeding by timing how long it took you to get from the last toll point to the current one. they dont care....they are not ticketing for it !

The Hampton Tolls has two barrier-separated lanes for Fastpass. No slowing needed.

There are about 8 other manned toll booths. Some of which allow Fast-Pass. In the summer, traffic is backed up to Salisbury. When you finally get to the tolls, the manned ones are empty. Everyone is slowed down in the "free flowing" fastpass lanes. It's infuriating.

Why they can't just move to a system similar to the Tobin Bridge is beyond me.

I often use the manual plaza on 93 in NH because the "fast" one is backed up but the plaza is empty as long as you pick one of the E-ZPass lanes.

I slow down because I have a cousin who was a toll booth worker and was killed by a car speeding through the booth. I won’t stop slowing down, no matter how much it irritates people. Sorry, not sorry.

Funkybeatzzz OP t1_iu8wfdx wrote

There are no toll booth workers at the ones I’m talking about. It’s just transponders and license plate cameras. Chill out.

Eh, I think I’d rather spend my life worrying about the safety of others over worrying about getting from point A > point B faster.

Funkybeatzzz OP t1_iu8xc9z wrote

There are no people manning the toll booths. None. Going from highway speeds to a dead stop at toll plazas is also a safety issue for drivers. Your point about safety makes no sense.

When was the last time you drove on the Pike? There haven’t been toll booth workers for years.
