I recently spent a few days in your city and had a great time. Here's a list of the highlights.

  • I stayed in the Back Bay area at the Revolution (would recommend). Beautiful place, especially with the Fall foliage. Berkley Perk across the street made me a great and inexpensive breakfast every day.
  • My first day was the only day of nice weather and I spent a good chunk of it in the Boston Commons.
  • First night there I went to Hojoko for dinner. Delicious food and super friendly bar tenders. Afterwards I watched the Phillies game at Bleachers. And to my delight there were a bunch of Phillies fans there!
  • The Beehive has great food and one of the better beer selections in the area. Happened to go on a live music night (lucky me!).
  • Carmelina's in the North End was a lovely time -- though I learned that I'm not a huge fan of carbonara. Who knew? Burratza was to die for though. Sitting at the counter with a view of the kitchen rocked.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits at both the MFA and the ICA. I wish I had spent more time in museums during my trip.
  • Saw "Decision to Leave" (2.5/5 for me) at Coolidge Corner Theater (5/5).
  • My last night there I got dinner at Shojo -- possibly my favorite spot of the trip. Great sidebar recommendation. Absolutely delish and a pretty good beer selection to boot.
  • Shout out to Rock Spot Climbing and their creative boulder routes. Shorter than I'm used to but they absolutely kicked my ass.
  • Your transit system was nice and clean and easy -- had no trouble getting anywhere I wanted to, on foot or via tram/subway.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things but tl;dr I had a great time. Thank you!

For someone coming to visit you really did your research well!! Shojo is so amazing, their art on the walls makes it a beautiful atmosphere too!

The sidebar made it easy! Plus a few friends of mine used to live in Boston, though ages ago.

First, fuck Philly.

Now that we’ve settled that, what is this “sidebar” you speak of?

Philly rocks, ya dumbshit. Also I was referring to the "tourism wiki" thinger. I found it super helpful.

As a transplant from Philly, I would have gone with 'jabroni' but it wouldn't translate as well.

Excuse me there tourist, you must not be familiar with the port city of Boston. It is actually Boston Common, not Boston Commons. Please enjoy this map that we made to help you out.

Badge of shame right here.

It’s a common mistake, don’t worry about it.

Similar pedantic offenses are if you stay "in Cape Cod" or "in Martha's Vineyard." The correct preposition for both is on.

Good Lord, the "Capitol Building" spans east to west from Norwood to Hopkinton, and Faneuil Hall sits in Norwell to Abington.

I don't want to live here anymore.

Don't listen to them. Contrary to popular belief there is more than one common in Boston

Does anyone else crack up when the bot refers to Boston as a port city? I mean, it technically is, but I would make the argument that more commerce and travel occurs via air than via boat!

It’s a joke in reference to an old post here. There’s a lot of that in this sub. I’d say only about 25% of us get it. With a city and sub that’s made of a lot of transients and visitors, that don’t get the references, it can get tired.

Have not heard of Shojo. From a lifelong local to a tourist - not for your kind words, but for the recommendation - thank you!!!

I will be sure to check it out soon!!

Shojo is great, as is their place next door, Ruckus Ramen. Hojoko on the other hand used to be great and now is not so much.

Hojoko used to be such an awesome spot. It was absolute ass when I went a couple months ago. Sojuba next door is a lot of fun though and probably the best service I've seen anywhere.

Glad y ou enjoyed yourself! I'm going to have to check a couple of these places, actually. It's like if a friend comes to town to be a tourist and you finally get yourself arsed enough to try places.

BTW I think the vast majority of us are going to be rooting for the Phillies!

Great to hear this! As someone who lives in the Boston area - and really enjoys it - I am a big fan of Philly. Just visited for the fifth time last week (in 2 years) - loads of fun

Next time you visit I would suggest going to Quincy Market and taking a walk down the Greenway. Growing up and visiting the city every year or so these were always my favorite, and now that I live here they're still super fun to visit from time to time

How bad is the Transit in Philly if you found the T "nice and clean and easy"? That honestly scares me.

ineffectivegoggles OP t1_iu8swaj wrote

In Philly we only have two subway lines. The El has that unfortunate setup where you have seats on either side that all face front, rather than seats at the side facing in. Not uncommon for there to be like, half-eaten take-out on the floor. Also not uncommon to have people passed out in a drug haze taking up a row of seats. It has been a little better lately as there is a new company handling cleaning and security but still, lots of room for improvement. Trains are pretty regular at least!

I’m glad you enjoyed your time here. I spent time in your city pre Covid and had a good time, but the area where I stayed around city hall made me feel unsafe at night for the first time in my life.
