This year I owed MA income tax, but this calculator says I’m getting back more than that. Do I get back what I paid and this amount?

All that matters is the total state income tax you paid. Doesn’t matter whether it was withheld from your paycheck or you owed it on tax day. You’ll get back roughly 13% of the total state tax you paid.

Gotcha, thank you!

It's impossible to say without specific numbers. Look at Line 32 of your Massachusetts return. Most people will be receiving approximately 13% of that number.

You compute your potential refund by how much you paid in taxes to Massachusetts (5% of your annual salary) not your annual income.
