Tipping for the breakfast buffet.

Tipping at Breakfast? We have the included buffet breakfast (included in room rate at time of purchase). However servers do pour coffee and juice. Been leaving a few dollars but on the third day they put a star by suggested tips 15, 20 and 25 % on the room bill you sign.

The listed price for the buffet breakfast is $80. I wouldn't pay more than $30 for it though and would not opt for it if I ever returned to this hotel which I wouldn't. Is it offensive to be tipping $5 per day?

The breakfast is okay. Nothing special. The service has been okay - couple of niggles but we're not fussy and tend not to complain (handling glasses by the rim you drink from, no refills, waiting to get a table or for the items to be replenished on the buffet).

To me tipping has gotten out of hand as a way for companies to not pay. 15% is the average for a full service meal, if you're not providing that don't expect it.

Tipping is out of hand. But 15% hasn’t been the average tip in probably 20 years.

15% hasn't been the average for a full service meal in years, and many tipped workers would make less money and/or have fewer opportunities to make more money if they weren't tipped

And what should I expect to pay for a self serve buffet breakfast where you're poured a coffee and a juice? One pour. No refils.

The hotel lists the buffet as being $40 per person.

If I am putting the food on my plate myself then what am I tipping for? Table service or delivery deserves a tip, otherwise I'd only tip for exceptional service

For a self serve buffet where they pour one drink? I’m normally a generous tipper but I’d probably leave a $5 and not be happy about it at all. I’d also fill out whatever they have for feedback letting them know what I think about being asked to tip at least 15%

If it’s the type of thing where they have like an omelette station with a tip jar throw that person a few bucks tho, they’re making something on the spot for you.

For a buffet where the service being provided is bussing and top offs? Hell no.

Ever since 2020 tipping has gotten way out of control! It is the way employers get away with not paying their employees a living wage, which is frustrating to both employees and customers as prices everywhere are going up. Because the hotel has stated that it expects you to tip on their breakfast buffet, they can get away with paying their waitstaff as little as $6.15 per hour. I would not stay at that hotel again, and I would tell them why.
