What's the RMV driver's license renewal process like nowadays? It looks like we have to get a Real ID now instead of the regular driver's license.

How long is the entire process at the RMV with an appointment? Every appointment is 10 minutes apart but I have my doubts it will only take 10 minutes. Are there any delays with an appointment? Do they still do the eye exam?

Tell me about your experience.

To the best of my knowledge, you don't have to get a RealID. If you have a passport card, trusted traveler card (eg Global Entry), CAC, etc, there's no real reason to jump through the hoops to get one. I was able to renew my "not for federal ID" license entirely on-line.

It is a tough process if you need to visit RMV. I am renewing too & checked open dates this morning - first and only available is November 28 (WTF). Back in my college days took me 1-1.5 months to do the entire process of getting license. If you don’t have to get Real ID, go for online renewal without appointment. Hope this helps!

If you have AAA you can renew and/or switch to a real ID at their locations. So much faster.

I took my brother to renew his state ID at the RMV in Haymarket and the appointments meant nothing. You just join the massive line and cross your fingers.

I got extremely lucky in May 2021 and my entire Real ID appointment took 20 minutes. I don’t think I’ll see that sort of luck again in my life. I was also over-prepared and brought more forms of proof than needed just because they were assholes about that when I transferred my license to MA years ago. The longest part was taking a photo!
