I’d prefer that than the magnetic bag kevin hart forced my phone into

They sent out the patrols every time he did a song. Lots of folks got busted. Was interesting to watch.

I guess they meant it when they showed that "don't record shit, we will end you" disclaimer before the show

Weird, no such thing in Manchester on Saturday.

They were there as well. Big yellow shirt dudes (4 of them) walked the floor and were collecting phones. A couple of parties were escorted out during MMA Ear.

Ah, I stand corrected. Didn't see that from up in the nosebleeds. I just remembered that we arrived as the opener was starting, so we must have missed the admonishment at the beginning.

Phone recordings at any comedy show are a major NO - mostly because they don’t want you to know how often they recycle the same shit.

It makes sense though. If I watch a video someone grabbed of a band playing a song I like it is not going to take away from my enjoyment of seeing it live for myself. In fact being there personally where you're enveloped in the music is an experience that is both different and improved from watching it on a phone, computer or tv.

However, for a comedian if you know the joke & punchline the element of surprise is taken away so it is not going to be as funny and if it is widely known the crowd reaction is going to be seriously diminished.

Plus the big popular comics usually try out material at smaller clubs before going on tour and have a vested interest in not letting a work in progress getting out there before the real money making venture.

However they should use the magnetic lock bags instead.

Yeah, remember what happened to Kramer.

I mean are they supposed to put on a different set every night for the entire tour? Of course they reuse jokes, what a dumb take

fakecrimesleep t1_itomxtv wrote

It’s not a “take” at all just a fact. I don’t expect comedians to come up with different sets every show. They just know people aren’t as likely to come if people just keep throwing stuff up on YouTube or people will be disappointed they’re not hearing anything fresh etc. going out is $$$$ now. Plenty of people are fine staying home and watching stand up recordings

jtet93 t1_iton3q5 wrote

Yeah but it’s not like some big secret they “don’t want you to know.” Obviously they want people to pay to go see the show. Same reason you can’t bring a camera into a movie theater

Tell me you have no idea how comedy works without telling me you have no idea how comedy works

fakecrimesleep t1_itonkcs wrote

…I know how comedy works. It’s pretty common knowledge most recycle and evolve material show to show. I go to shows regularly. The vast majority of them do not want you to have your phone out recording their bits and posting shit to YouTube. they all have their different ways to call people out for doing it when they’re on stage and it happens at pretty much every other show I’m at.

Clamgravy t1_itpw1cq wrote

Recycle? It's a show that takes time to put together. Are you inferring that comedians should go up every show and have a different set? Just go up and be funny... But a different funny than yesterday

fakecrimesleep t1_itq70w2 wrote

Do you know what infer means? No, I stated on a different comment that this is not my expectation. Just pointing out the reality that most comedians do the same jokes set to set. It is a statement of fact.

LochnessIntelChief07 t1_ito0b28 wrote

It’s not always that. Many comedians just like to try out new stuff on an audience and like to truly feel out what works and what doesn’t. If it gets plastered all over YouTube anyways there is no point.

What I don’t get is why people can’t just watch a show or concert without pulling out their phone and recording. It’s like a mental disorder or something.
