Hello! I’m not really a tourist, I live less than an hour away from the city, but I was hoping some locals could give me some insight on how safe the Charles River Esplanade is at night?

I’m taking my girlfriend to Ramsay’s Kitchen in Back Bay for our anniversary and wanted to take her for a walk there to propose, though after reading some articles online I’m thinking that may not be the safest choice.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

It won’t be super late, anywhere from 7-8:30

yes. It is safe to walk the esplanade at night. It’s much more dangerous to walk through an intersection than a park. And that’s not a pedestrian safety joke - the vast majority of violent crime and muggings happens in non-park settings.

You'll be fine. It's much safer than the Common/ Public Garden late at night.

In 1965 it wasn’t: Yeah, down by the river Down by the banks of the river Charles Ah, that's what's happenin', baby That's where you'll find me Along with lovers, muggers, and thieves Ah, but they're cool people

That's a statistic which proves nothing, like "Most traffic accidents take place within 50 miles of home, so you can drive like a maniac when you're more than 50 miles away." The vast majority of time people spend outside is in non-park settings, so it's not surprising that most crimes take place there.

If I were you, I'd make an alternative reservation. That place is overrated. Just a name. Food actually tastes below average for the price. Beef Wellington tastes like boiled meat in a $5 bun.

Lmao embarrassment about what? A simple google search comes up with a woman being stabbed in the head at the esplanade. I’d rather ask some locals than run the risk of getting mugged while I’m proposing

Great thank you, I saw some conflicting opinions in this sub Reddit from old posts and was under the impression that it wasn’t very well lit

Not only is it safe, but there's lots of friendly men looking to meet new people.

It’s not the best lit thing out there and there are better parts of the esplanade to do that thing, I would recommend closer to the Longfellow bridge near the dome in the park
