Donut Shops in Boston?

Recently moved to Boston a few months ago and I’m craving donuts from a local Boston shop. Is there anywhere around the city that isn’t a dunkin that you can buy fresh donuts?

Twin donuts is my favorite. No frill, reasonably priced, good donuts. You have to go early, they run out pretty fast. At least of the ones I like

While I'm here: Mochinut should not be slept on either, however nontraditional they may be.

The top ones are Blackbird, Union Square, and Kanes. My personal favorite is Blackbird but lots of people have strong opinions. Also FWIW, you don’t need to say fresh donuts other than Dunkin — Dunkin donuts are NOT fresh but rather mass produced and shipped to the various stores

Meh, Blackbird is just delicious icing on a mediocre donut. I tried them years ago when they just opened - ended up eating the icing but throwing away the bland tasteless bready base. Gave them another try more recently and hadn’t improved. Union Sq donuts is decent, I’d give it maybe a 7/10. Kane’s is also decent, but too many toppings - I want a donut not a candy bar on top of fried dough.

My platonic ideal of a perfect donut is a freshly made apple cider donut still hot, and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Some of the apple orchards have these, but they can be hit or miss.

Since it's fall, if you get a chance, take a trip to an apple orchard to get a fresh and hot cider donut.

Union Square Donuts is great. Personally I've been very unimpressed with Blackbird but Union is consistently excellent.

This is my answer too. Union/Blackbird/Kanes are also good but not quite as good as DwaD.

Special shout out to the coffee roll at Kanes which is special.

Agreed. Went here for the first time last week, around 8 am. All of the donuts I bought were still very warm, and delicious. First place I’ve found in the area to do this.

On a side note, I went to twin donuts the day before and was disappointed. Selection was meager and the donuts were just okay.

Kanes is my personal favorite. Their honey dip, coconut crunch, and coffee roll are my go-to's but they rotate monthly specials that are fun too.

It's kind of my stand in for Shipley's (am a southern transplant).

Everyone here is missing THE BEST donuts you can get around the city: Market Basket Bakery donuts. I’ve never had a glazed donut better then these. I would say Kane’s is a close second best.

They are like massive Krispy Kreme donuts... so good. I just got a Lobster Tail from them too, which was also surprisingly delicious and only goes like $3.50. They also got full subs for $5.50 (hot subs are only a dollar more pretty much) which has me coming back at least a few times a week.

In the city: Kane's is the common favorite. Union Sq is good for hipster brioche. Blackbird for cake. Doughboy if you're looking for the old school Dunkin vibe but with edible donuts.

North of the city, Donuts With a Difference in Medford. South of the city, Donut King in Quincy/Weymouth.

Further out (you need a car), Basic Batch (Milford), Glazy Susan and Doughnut Homies (Worcester), Ruby's (Ayer), and Donna's (Tewksbury) are all worth a stop if you're in the area.

Anna's donuts in West Roxbury. Twin Donut in Allston. Both are traditional. Country Kitchen in Walpole as well for that style. I'd rather eat a week old dunkies hoola hooped by the Dunkin' rat than chomp a blackbird, but I understand the appeal of overpaying for a hyped up piece of trash to join a club.

Note that they sell out of most, if not all by early afternoon.

They both have good donuts. The Quincy location is more basic/old school donut shop and coffee counter. The Weymouth location has specialized in fancy, highly decorated donuts and there can be a line out the door when they are busy.

I don’t like Union Square donuts. They are very heavy and yeasty. Super dense and greasy. Maybe that’s some peoples bag of tea but it ain’t mine.

Doughboy's is probably the best bang for your buck and a more traditional donut. I do like Blackbird and Kane's, but sometimes a simple donut does the trick.

This question is always answered with some combination of Union/Kanes/Blackbird and I don't understand why David gets no love in the donut conversation.

If you want simple then the honey dip and Boston creme are just as good as elsewhere. If you want something fancy they put together a real nice strawberry shortcake (I assume it's still there, it's been awhile since I've been).

I don't know why Davis Square seems to get left out of the donut conversation - it's more than cromulent in a city with a weak overall donut scene

Lyndell's in Ball Sq, Somerville.

They're the closest thing you can get to going back in time to the 50s for a donut. Cheap as fuck to boot.

Coming from someone who doesn't even really like donuts, I got a Blackbird chocolate glazed donut one time and it was ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY. I need to go back there soon because I still dream about it.

I find union square donuts to be huge and more airy, whereas blackbird is much more cakey. I prefer the latter, but up to personal preference for sure.

If you’re willing to go outside Boston proper, Davis Square Donuts in Somerville is in my opinion the best around! Great variety of classic donuts as well as some specialty!
