I’ll take the uncommon stance here: yes it is worth it. This is not like some summer vacation getaway with nothing to do and everything’s closed in the off-season. Here are some benefits:

-Hotels are going to be around 75% off of their summer prices, you can treat your mom to a really beautiful place at low cost.

-There are plenty of indoor activities, ballets, musicals/plays, and great restaurants. I highly recommend taking mom to the symphony if she’s into music at all. The above mentioned activities run pretty heavy in the month of December.

-There are a few really cool outdoor skating rinks downtown with Christmas retail space surrounding it.

It’s definitely not NYC is terms of festivities, but you’re also not going to be surrounded by massive crowds of tourists all day. Bring a nice jacket and set up a few shows to see, you and mom will have a great time.

December is great in Boston, not sure why others disagree. The museums are all open as usual, many areas are "dressed up" for the holidays with trees and lights, there are holiday markets to visit, as mentioned above there are holiday performances, and although it may be cold it is still fine weather for walking around.

I completely agree with this OP. I just spent thanksgiving there and am already dying to go back lol. Absolutely do it!!

Since it will be cold, I’d recommend staying near Faneuil Hall so that you have a good amount of walkable things nearby. Have so much fun!
