Your best bet is to turn it over, and look at the stamp on the bottom of the cup. Will usually state the manufacturer and sometimes the pattern and/or the country.

Then I'd use the inter webs.

And if for some reason that doesn’t work, I ran your photo in google lens and got ROYAL WORCESTER Bone China Cup. It would work better if you take the photo of the non damaged side and with a plain background.

Does that work?? It's a cup, there are many that look just like it. Unless that image came from their website or accompanying site, how would that be accurate?

China Fair in Cambridge is a good place to look if it's ordinary porcelain and not fine china.

If you haven’t looked into the Japanese traditional repair method of kintsugi, it might be of interest. You can get kits specifically for it, and it looks great when finished (much easier if the piece that broke off is whole/in larger chunks).

As a ceramicist, I agree kintsugi would look great, but it won’t be as functional of a cup. Definitely no dishwasher and no microwave anymore, and depending on how they execute the repair, possibly no more using the cup as an actual cup.

Would be nice if OP found a replacement cup and used kintsugi to repair this one just so their mom can have both.

This was my first thought as well, would look awesome with the way this cup broke

The gold on white would look very nice indeed, and that break line would almost look intentional

The replacement can't just be "similar", it has to be exact, or else you're a bad son.

It's too round and the handle is more narrow. Speaking as a person with a favorite mug, it's less about how it looks and more about how it fits your hand.

When you go to buy a replacement, bring the broken one wrapped up in something so it doesn't cut you, and hold it in your hand and compare how they rest in your hand, how the weight is distributed, but especially how the handle fits and how easy and comfortable it is to hold for a long moment.

I have those WS cups and they are great, but more cup than mug. The porcelain is lovely to drink out of, but the 2 important qualities IMO are handle shape/feel and then volume.

China Fair is a really good suggestion—they may even have a guess about the original.

Crate + Barrel has some nice options too: https://www.crateandbarrel.com/search?query=White+Porcelain+Mug&isLanded=true&isReadyToShipAvailabilityOn=false

Everything about that photo says Ikea so I'm gonna go with this one

Someone else linked to a $27 one and I thought “WTF?” This is much more my budget for things I will definitely break.

becausefrog t1_j25eugn wrote

IKEA usually has a stamp on the bottom, but that one seems closer than the WS one.

paxmomma t1_j25a915 wrote

I doubt anything by Ikea or Williams Sonoma would not have their markings on the bottom.

Did the piece break off as one piece? You could repair it easily if so! Edit: I see the piece lol. use this link to see how to fix it. I’ve used gorilla glue and a rubber band to fix broken ceramics before!

You do not want to drink out of a cup fixed with gorilla glue. Toxic af.
