I'm a brown grad student studying in Boston. Boston has been very welcoming, kind, and friendly so far. But I had a fairly racist experience yesterday when I was visiting Plymouth and was at a cafe. A man yelled really derogatory terms about my nationality which was outright offensive. I was shocked and a little scared so I didn't say anything and simply ignored the situation. I've been still processing it and would like to know if anyone had similar experiences in towns outside Boston. How did you respond to it and how did you process it? I'm nervous that I might have to normalize such experiences being a foreigner and be prepared if something similar happens in the future.

I think this particular experience was an outlier and doesn't represent the overall population as I met incredibly sweet and friendly locals in the town who gave me recommendations on places to visit with a big smile.

Update: Thank you everyone for your support and kindness, and for everyone who reached out to me to make sure I'm okay. I'm touched and relieved to see so much care around ❤️
