Hi Boston folks,

Myself and two friends will be traveling from Ireland to Boston for paddys weekend this year.

We've a few things lined up. Dropkick Murphys tickets, hockey playoffs and a 5km run on the Sunday. We're confident this will be unreal craic.

One small issue is that we fly back to the emerald isle on Sunday evening which means we will be the smelliest fuckers in Boston after the run unless we can find a shower.

We were thinking of a) finding a gym that will let us in on a day pass or b) buy a lounge ticket at the airport and clean up out there.

I guess this isn't a position that locals find themselves in very often but I figured it's worth a try to ask.

Thanks!

I'd just request a day pass from a YMCA.

Get a trenchcoat and you and the mates can trim that down to $4/head.

Planet fitness is probably your best bet. They may let you in free if you explain it’s just a quick shower, but if not the day pass isn’t expensive and there’s a few around the city. Take note though that you need to bring your own towels and toiletries. I’d suggest sandals too.

They've been having a ton of problems with people coming in and stealing from lockers so they may say no.

What time is the 5k run on Sunday? Were you planning on checking out of your hotel and then going to the run, and then just hang out until your flight?

If it's early enough you might be able to arrange a late checkout (even if there's a fee involved) and get back to shower before you head out. Generally there's leeway until 1pm without too much trouble. Or even ask the hotel if you can leave your bags and come back and use the hotel gym's showers or something along those lines?

11am. You might be right, I've contacted the hotel.

I bet you could get in on a Planet Fitness day pass. They are a no-frills gym over here and they will email you a one-day trial pass for free (at least they did pre-Covid). There's one not far from the airport and a couple others in town. I'd recommend checking out their website.

The lockers run small so you may have to get creative on keeping tabs on your luggage. You'll also need your own soap, shampoo and towels there.

Safe travels and enjoy.

I know this has nothing to do with your question but the Wolfe Tones are playing in Boston the week of Paddy's Day if you're into trad, should be good craic. I don't want to miss them because you don't know how much longer they'll be playing.

Sincerely,

A fellow Paddy

You could also look into the Airline lounges at Logan. Some might have showers and a day pass you could buy. A quick google recommends American Airlines Admirals Club.

College hockey playoffs in Boston will be an excellent night out. Very fun. No worries.

40

asmithey t1_j61cfgs wrote

Should be fun. Drunk college students. Drunk folks that think they're still in university.

Do you have tickets for Friday or Saturday? Friday will be the semifinals, so two games, Saturday just the one final game.

9

LadyGreyIcedTea t1_j61gkir wrote

Probably the drunkest I've ever been in my adult life the semi-finals of the hockey east tournament in 2016. Providence vs. UMass Lowell went into triple overtime and the BC-Northeastern game, that I was there to see, didn't even start until like 10pm. Fortunately that was the last weekend of late night T service.

I went to another game at the Garden a week or 2 later and the Sam Adams guy remembered me from the Hockey East game.

14

asmithey t1_j61j1a7 wrote

I was at that game! I remember looking up at the scoreboard and it saying "Period 6". Lowell won on a bounce into the net off a skate. I stuck around for the first period of the BC/NU game and headed home. I was pretty hungover that next day, but rallied to go see Lowell lose to Northeastern.

ExpatJundi t1_j622et4 wrote

The games won't be NHL caliber but they'll be really good and a lot of the players will go pro.

If you don't have classpass you can sign up for a free trial (remember to cancel). I think it's one month free at the moment. Then you can sign up for gyms with open time or "gym time" where you can show up to use the gym and the amenities. For example, right now Republic Fitness allows you to come in for open gym time for a few credits.

I did this a few years back when the shower in my apartment was dropping like an IV drip and hopped around to different gyms and use their showers.

Would definitely recommend a late check out if possible, but FYI not all of the lounges at Logan have showers, they're generally fine but for your purposes you might want to double-check if you go that route.

If you're flying out of Terminal E (like most international flights), I think the BA and Emirates lounges are the only ones with showers. That being said, not sure if either of them do day passes. If you have a choice, the BA lounge is better IMO.
