My wife and I are binging Cheers and we’ve discussed this a few times. I know it’s a neighborhood bar and these people would all realistically live nearby, but if the setting were todays Boston where would they all live? I’m thinking:

Sam - South End

Dianne - Back Bay

Carla - Dorchester

Norm - Seaport

Cliff - West Roxbury

Coach - ???

Woody - Southie

Nick - Revere

Edit: I’m not thinking about the 80s, I was a kid and lived in Missouri lol. In this scenario we pick these people up and put them in 2023 Boston but don’t change anything else.

Iirc Cliff is explicitly Somerville, Frasier is in Beacon Hill, and Carla is East Boston ("near the airport").

Idk I've been watching through it the first time lately

Coach is 1000% from Meffah. Dianne is Newton, Frazier is Brookline and Lilith is Cambridge.

Cliff doesn’t strike me as a Somerville character, I could definitely see him in Roslindale or WR.

Frasier is absolutely Beacon Hill!

I don’t spend enough time in Eastie to get a feel for the neighborhood but I was thinking Carla would fit in around that part of Dorchester right before you get to Quincy.

I don’t think you’re far off, some of mine are just for the sake of being different:

Sam - a former Red Sox pitcher, would absolutely live in the Seaport.

Dianne would live on Beacon Hill.

Carla would live in Hyde Park but tell everyone “it’s Readville” (it’s not).

Norm would live in Dorchester but like, the Polish Triangle in an Irish battleship.

Cliff would be Roslindale.

Coach would be holding fast in Jamaica Plain and absolutely despise it.

Woody would be Charlestown but near the monument but pretend like he’s from the projects.

Nick would live in Eastie and also hate it.

Bonus - Fraser would live in Cambridge.

I could see Coach in the North End. But no one lives in the Seaport. Not back then.

I could see Sam in so many neighborhoods. I picked South End over the Seaport because he’s a respectable business owner, and while still a womanizer not the animal he used to be.

Dianne would fit in in Back Bay or Beacon Hill.

I didn’t think about Hyde Park for Carla but you’re right and I think that would be a better fit than Dorchester. I was thinking her kids would be the guys that would un-ironically wear an OFD bucket hat.

I picked Seaport for Norm because he’s totally a finance bro. He is married though so Polish Triangle or Savin Hill could both work.

I’ve lived here a year and have been to the west part of the city like once so Roslindale and West Roxbury are the same thing to me and Cliff strikes me as someone who would live over there.

Coach is such a wild card! Maybe he inherited a house in Roxbury still lives there, and he doesn’t hate it at all.

Woody could also live all over the place. I picked Southie because he probably likes the beach and would hang out at Stats in his time off.

For some reason I can only see Nick in Revere lol.

I take back Beacon Hill for Frasier he would absolutely live in Cambridge.

Coach is an anomaly lol, he could live in Lowell and take the commuter train to the bar every day far all I know.

See I’m talking these characters live in 2023 Boston. I picked Seaport because Norm is a finance bro.

My question is a little more nuanced, I read that post before I made this one! There’s an episode in season 3 I think where they show houses and apartments with each character who lives there speaking from inside. Not too accurate though there wasn’t a single triple decker in the entire opening.

On the show, Carla lived "near the airport", so she was probably in Eastie.

Norm would never live in the Seaport. There are no good bars to be a regular at.

That said, Sam lives in the Fenway area to relive his glory days.

Coach lives in Brighton.

Carla is in Eastie.

Frasier is cambridge.

Dianne is beacon hill but is ashamed of her privilege and says she lives in Mission Hill.

Cliff lives with his mother in Charlestown.

Norm lives in Allston and is a regular at the Sil.

Woodie still lives in southie.

Rebecca lives in Brookline.

Lilith is somerville all the way.

I’d say Norm in Brookline but it was his wife’s decision

Carla was in Winthrop or Revere I think, but she probably bounced around apartments for a while before finding her house on the flight path maybe Somerville in the 70s/80s.

Norm was an accountant, decent job, bar was near work not home, he’s taking the train out to Arlington/Melrose.

Sam lived in Back Bay, walk to work, walk to Fenway, lots of places nearby to meet women.

Woody was definitely a Somerville/Cambridge guy.

Diane’s in Harvard Square for sure

Frasier is in Beacon Hill

Cliff and Coach are both along the Red Line between Broadway and Savin Hill.

Sam likely held onto his Brookline condo from his playing days (even with his drinking).

I can only do this from a decade appropriate angle, no Sea Port, etc. So, some others….

Coach: Dorchester Diane: JP Carla: Revere Norm: West Roxbury Frazier: An early South End pioneer ( only Seattle bought into his well bred bullshit ). Woody: Who cares? Cliff: Drove home drunk to Bridgewater.
