You not gonna escape weed by moving to other cities where cannabis is legal …is this post even real? Lol

Cannabis allergy is actually a thing, because marijuana comes from plants. Plant allergies are the most common allergies, even though marijuana allergies aren't common it's not unheard of. So yeah, I am allergic to pot.

Ok by how is moving to LA or Chicago gonna help you? You are aware weed is legal in both those cities as well?

Then speak to a Dr. I’m not sure what a city specific sub Reddit is going to do for you. We can’t tell people they can’t smoke pot around you. Sorry.

You’re a grad student but you haven’t learned yet, not to bitch to someone about something they can’t do anything about?

anon22196 t1_j60zaw1 wrote

Excuse me, but I'm looking for advice because I have been going through hell and it's something that I can't control. Why should I sacrifice my ability to breathe so someone else can smoke? There's no need to be rude.

You’ve discounted peoples advice and you’ve told others you don’t want to talk about it. You’re a troll OP. You’re not looking for advice. You’re looking for attention. Grow up.

I asked for advice on cities where the smell may be less pungent. I have tried inhalers and they do not work well. I did not say I didn't want to talk about it, I responded to another person's post on someone saying I should see a therapist. I'm not looking for attention. I'm genuinely looking for advice on other places to live, so you don't need to be a jerk.

[deleted] OP t1_j614l4l wrote

Then go to other city subs where you think you might want to move then. How is a Boston sub supposed to help you with advice about living somewhere other than Boston? And why are you still responding to me when you’ve deleted this post? Go away OP. Seriously.

You should pitch this to an allergist so they can study you because from your story, you might be the most pot-allergic person in the world.

ReverseMermaidMorty t1_j60s93i wrote

If even just smelling it is causing these attacks could it be anxiety/trauma related? Would seeing a therapist help?

13

anon22196 t1_j60uike wrote

No. I honestly don't wanna talk about it. I just want to be somewhere where I don't have to smell it constantly. It's really hard because my body breaks out in hives and my asthma is constant.

dbhanger t1_j60wdl0 wrote

Probably not a city in the country that will keep you that isolated unfortunately. Have you tried an N95 mask? Or one with intake filters?

Otherwise you're looking at the burbs where you can be in your car until the door of whatever store you're going to.

DeffNotTom t1_j60wi5t wrote

If your asthma is that poorly controlled, you should be on a inhaled corticosteroid. And if you're already on one, you really need to have your doctor reevaluate your treatment plan.

anon22196 t1_j60wva0 wrote

I was on one due to my Covid infection in 2020. I nearly died from Covid and my asthma was bad before but it's unbearable now I don't like taking an inhaler long-term as I can cause other side effects. However, I don't think it's some thing that I should have to take constantly anyway. I don't want to have to take an inhaler, Just walking down the street five times a day..

DeffNotTom t1_j60y2g4 wrote

You have asthma. You need to be on inhalers. Or one day, you could end up dead. I have three inhalers. I don't like it. But it's what I need to maintain a fulfilling life without having to worry about restricting my activities to what is safe for my lungs.

bostonchef72296 t1_j60zj5a wrote

What’s worse the “other side effects” of the inhaler or the things you claim to be suffering from now?

1

anon22196 t1_j60zwyh wrote

Studies of being on corticosteroids, long-term have negative effects, like malfunctions of the kidneys, liver or heart, depression, etc.

bostonchef72296 t1_j6108hx wrote

Smelling weed does not give you heart palpitations. That is your anxiety.

3

DeffNotTom t1_j6120de wrote

Those studies are more geared towards oral corticosteroids which are significantly larger doses. 🙄

There are some practicing doctors who have a specialization in helping overcome allergic reactions. Not easy to find but can help some people. If they are not able to detect it with their tests, then it may be more psychosomatic, which is not to downplay it, but a different approach, like therapist, may be helpful.

anon22196 t1_j60ufb7 wrote

Honestly, it's not a mental issue. It's literally my lungs. I don't want to have allergies like this, but I do. Honestly don't wanna talk about it but I just wanna be able to go on a jog and not have an asthma attack you know??

randomizeme1234 t1_j60wcav wrote

I believe you and suggest you find a clinical immunologist/ allergy specialist. They can sometimes teach your system to ignore the stimulus.

2

Proof-Variation7005 t1_j60y54w wrote

I think you're really underestimating the psychosomatic control that mind has over matter.

For people with a severe food allergy, simple telling them that the thing they just ate had peanuts or whatever can and will make symptoms start to manifest themselves in people. Experiments like this haven't been done for decades, for obvious ethical reasons, but it's been proven that the body can be tricked into real symptoms without the actual exposure.

I would move to a state where marijuana is still illegal if your allergy is that debilitating. But I know what you mean — my parents have an apartment in back bay and whenever I go running over there it always smells like skunk

5

anon22196 t1_j60t874 wrote

Exactly my point. It's like I want to go on a jog, but literally I live in the Kenmore area and it's so bad. Are there any major cities that do you have found that the smell is less potent than in Boston??

−5

DeffNotTom t1_j60vpgy wrote

The "smell" of marijuana smoke isn't going to cause an allergic reaction. Scents don't contain proteins and proteins are what you're actually allergic to. If you're allergic to apples, and you smell an apple, you're not going to have a reaction regardless of how bad your allergy is. On top of that, smoke, marijuana, cigarettes, or campfire, also have no proteins in it, so you're not having an allergic reaction from the smoke. Especially if you're outdoors where it's heavily diluted in the air. If merely smelling weed is causing that kind of reaction, you need a therapist, not an allergist.

7

anon22196 t1_j60wijr wrote

That's actually not true, weed hangs in the air. People have airborne allergies, and plants are some of the most common. I have a friend that is allergic to tree nuts, and her allergy is airborne. How is this different? If you're next to a bonfire, and you have asthma, the smoke from the campfire can still make it hard to breathe. When you smoke, or inhale something it gets into your lungs, regardless of whether you're outside or not..

−2

DeffNotTom t1_j60xt8y wrote

People are allergic to proteins in the plants that get distributed through the air. They are not allergic to the smell of the plants. Your friend isn't allergic to the smell of tree nuts. She's allergic to proteins in the tree nut dust. The molecules that make up scents are too small to carry proteins. Marijuana allergies are real, but unless you're trapped in a room with someone smoking, you eat it, or you rub the flower all over your skin, you're not going to trigger that allergy.

Smoke irritating your lungs when you have asthma isn't an allergy. Smoke is an irritant, not an allergen. And sitting next to a campfire is exposing yourself to several magnitudes higher concentration of smoke than walking through an area where someone smoked some weed.

It sounds like you have really poorly controlled asthma and you need to be on better maintenance inhalers. The hives is likely you having a panic attack worrying about your asthma and being triggered by the scent of weed.

You need a therapist and a pulmonologist.

You're not going to outrun the smell of weed in any major city in a country that is on track to full legalization.

3

[deleted] OP t1_j61328t wrote

Informative though! Especially the proteins. I work with food and nut purveyors are always warning about their “dust” contamination.

1

DeffNotTom t1_j613vkm wrote

Nut dust can float impressively far. But you need to be on the extreme end of nut allergy for that to be a risk. There's tons of published research about it and the risk is SUPER small. Most people with nut allergies just have PTSD and are overly cautious. Which isn't a bad thing as long as they're not letting it ruin their lives or using it as an excuse to make other people miserable (like pushing to ban pb&j in schools 😒)

You should definitely move to Los Angeles - all the weed there is grown outside and organic so you shouldn’t be allergic.

It's mostly when I'm walking by someone on the street and they're lighting up or smoking a joint. So it's not necessarily being around the plant but when people are actually smoking it. Are there areas of Los Angeles where there's less smoke??

OP - unfortunately you’re going to have to move to the ‘burbs or move to a big city in a state that has not legalized weed. Google can tell you where it is/isn’t legal.

You can have a pretty good life out in the ‘burbs along the subway or commuter rail.
