Hey, I'll be visiting Boston this year for the marathon in April. Airbnb's in my price range are located in Brookline, Somerville, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury and West Roxbury. I expect to be heading downtown/back Bay/Fenway for a lot of my exploring but curious to hear what the locals have to say about these spots. Any other tips will be appreciated!

My opinion: Airbnbs take away much needed housing from residents. Stay in a hotel.

Brookline, Somerville, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and West Roxbury are all neighborhoods in the Boston area that are located near the marathon route. Brookline is known for its vibrant downtown area and proximity to Boston University. Somerville is a diverse and artsy neighborhood with a lot of local restaurants and bars. Jamaica Plain is a historic neighborhood with a large park and a diverse community. Roxbury and West Roxbury are more residential neighborhoods with a mix of houses and apartments. All of these neighborhoods are easily accessible via public transportation, including the subway system (MBTA or "the T"). You can expect to travel around 30-40 minutes to get to the downtown or Back Bay area, depending on the specific location within these neighborhood and traffic.

all affluent safe residential neighborhoods. can you reach out to the owners and ask if they are in walking distance to "the T" (our subway system)?

This. All of these areas are fine (ignore the bonkers comment about homicides). In my mind, the most important thing is to Google Map the walking/train time to the areas you want to visit. I’m biased to Somerville, but a lot also depends on what kind of neighborhood you are looking for.

Some of those listed have areas that are frequent fliers for gun violence and homicides. I'd rather give our guest a heads up to check out the relative safety of some of these neighborhoods before committing to one.

Which ones specifically?

And which sub-neighboroods are you talking about within each neighborhood that are dangerous?

If your purpose for coming is the marathon, Brookline is the only place you mention that's on the marathon route.

All of them are fine except roxbury. West roxbury is a hike from downtown but its nice, and safe. Roxbury should be avoided.
