Lost airpods and filed a police complaint after. Is there any hope?

It’s been a week today since I lost my airpods at a planet fitness gym. The manager of the gym said they wont show me the camera footage because I have filed a police complaint and they will only show it to the police if they ask for it.

I asked the manager to search their database by address for users who came to the gym at that hour on that day when I lost my AirPods. The manager refused. It seems like she doesn’t want to help me at all. Very bad person.

Will the police actually take interest in helping me find the AirPods? A week without my airpods has beeen tough. I know the address of the person who has my airpods. I visited the location but its an apartment complex that has many apartment units. So, i didnt enter there. Now I see that my AirPods’ battery has drained and they don’t update their location on my app.

I’m a bit lost here, anyone who has experience with this kind of situation and knows how I can get my airpods back? Thanks

Lol not sure if this post is real. Anyway, in the U.S., the police typically don't investigate or try to solve small-scale theft like this, such as thefts under $1,000.

If you see how many stolen bike posts there are on this Sub and how few are solved by police, you'll know what I mean.

But Protip: If you have Renter's or Homeowner's Insurance you can likely file a theft claim and get your money back to buy new AirPods!

If you had renters insurance unless you paid for a low deductible plan it wouldn’t have been worth your time. I pay for a low deductible, high value plan just in case I get robbed or something. But a lot of plans have a $500 deductible. And a lot of terms and conditions.

The police are not going to investigate your $250 or less airpods. You have find my iPhone for that. It's your personal responsibility to take care of your own stuff. It's definitely not some part of a bigger thing. No one is stealing airpods with your dirty earwax and re-selling them. If they're newer airpods then they have the ability to be seen where their battery went dead. If they are older than the newest ones, you are talking $50-100 resale value.

It’s hardly worth the police’s time to pick up the paper to file this report. Maybe if you were in one of the richest zip codes in the country and had a couple friends who said they also had airpods stolen in that location then the cops would help. Otherwise, understand that your low value private property is not a good way to spend public resources’ time in retrieving. Sorry, but that’s reality.

yeah i've had cops drag their feet on stolen CAR so lets be honest, your earphones arent going to get much traction lmao. I did have a friend lose their iPhone and manage to get a nice cop to go to their house... when they knocked on the door the person said "i dont have it" and that was the end of it. It's not like they can go searching the house without a warrant (there's no judge that'll sign a warrant for that).

Look OP, you're clearly a bit out of touch for a number of reason (thinking the police would do anything, posting it on reddit, etc). But here's some practical advice: do NOT show up at someone's residence over petty theft. That's just asking for trouble. There are lots of wireless buds that are much cheaper than airpods, you'll be fine.

Tip for the future: Get yourself a renters insurance policy. It’s $10-$15 a month. It would cover a theft like this, as well as other property damage, liability, and living expenses if your apartment becomes uninhabitable.

And watch/lock up your valuables at the gym.

The police don’t care about your AirPods. The manager probably cared for a second, but the way you handled it, most likely annoyed them to the point that they have no interest in helping you find them. A private company isn’t going to expose the personal information of its clients to another private citizen; that’s a massive liability issue. Doing so would leave them open to being sued. You pressing the issue, and making ridiculous requests that most people would understand aren’t reasonable, is only compounding the issue.

Had you dealt with this differently, the manager probably would have reviewed the video. If they found anything, they’d most likely have worked with you on filing the police report. All you’ve done by approaching things as aggressively as you have, is convince the manager to not act proactively or cooperate with you. If they provided confirmation along with evidence of a particular suspect as part of your effort to file a report, the police would follow through.

Right now, your report’s details mean the police have to investigate to obtain evidence—it’s incomplete, in that sense. Those are man-hours that don’t always yield results, and not worth the cost of doing so for the item in question—especially because it’s not clear that a crime even occurred, or if you lost the item. If your report included confirmation that reliable evidence existed that:

1). a crime occurred

2). the suspect has been identified

3). who to contact to retrieve said evidence

then they’d have Probable Cause (minimum requirement to make an arrest) *and *a suspect. Because Felony Larceny starts at a value of greater or equal to $250, they’d definitely get your item back, and make an arrest. That manager was the one person you shouldn’t have alienated—corporations have strict rules regarding communication with law enforcement in these situations, which means it’s a headache for her to help you. She had to WANT to help you, to not mind going through that.

And to be honest, she was right to not share anything with you. You said you saw an address, AND WENT TO THE LOCATION. Thank God you didn’t have the apartment number. That’s the exact kind of thing she was trying to prevent—that business doesn’t want to be responsible for the possible outcome of someone making such an idiotic decision, and she doesn’t want to lose her job.

If losing something that, by design, is easy to lose bothers you this much…maybe you shouldn’t own it in the first place. They’re just AirPods, guy. Life gets way harder.

TL; DR

Knowing what information police need to see in a police report for smaller crimes, can greatly increase the chances they follow through. If you collect evidence to reach the minimum threshold for an arrest and include that information when you file, you’ve removed the financial demotivation for them to act, by eliminating investigative costs. If you need the help of others to make that happen, be tactful and act with intent when discussing their cooperation. Make requests, not demands.

And for chrissakes, don’t go looking for suspected criminals at their homes without the police involved.

Hm.. thank you for taking the time to write this down. It was a ridiculous request on my part for sure. I missed mentioning this before in the post but the manager did go thru the video but the cameras are at an angle and she seees me putting the airpods down but when I pick up stuff from the treadmill, she can’t tell if I picked the airpods or not.

I would not want the person to face the harsh consequences for doing what they did. I wouldn’t want to press charges, even if I could.

And, it does bother me in a healthy way. I might be going a bit far but yea, my friends and my brother have been helping too and they accompanied me to the persons address too.

But you’re right, i will follow up with the police once, if they entertain my request, then great, otherwise I’ll halt my investigations lol

I lost my passport on the 66 bus with an airpod connected to it, they were in the MBTA building, and then a worker or someone else stole it. police did not give a single fuck. Why would they care about a pair of AirPods if they didn’t care about someone stealing a piece of identification like that? I just reported it stolen and am getting a new passport 🤷🏼‍♂️

No. She is a good person. She doesn't want to violate the privacy of all of her valuable clients all because you lost something. The reality is that you don't know if it's a theft, any variety of things could have happened accidentally by someone. Someone could have picked them up in error thinking they were theirs and now they've ditched them in the stairwell of an apartment complex. Move on, the world does not revolve around you.

Sorry OP. Probably going to have to take an L on this one. I was involved in a car accident awhile ago ($10k plus in damages), police came to the scene and took everyone’s info. The party responsible for the crash has gone MIA ever since so neither I nor my insurance company was able to get a cent from them. There’s zero chance they’ll take interest in your AirPods…

Good luck! I think your best bet would be to try and get them back from whoever found them. Maybe leave a note at the apartment building, just make sure not to accuse someone of stealing them, or they won't want to return them obviously. Something nice, maybe a reward for finding them?

You need think to about the privacy of users. Do you really expect the gym manager to do this because somebody just says they lost something? How does she even know that you are telling the truth?

There were fingerprints where the window broke, some blood on the door from a cut, a camera facing my car from the store I parked in front of.

I had a ~$2000 bike stolen off the street locked up. I filed a report just to cover my ass, even though it was obvious that the cops couldn’t have given less of a shit about it. I ended up tracking it down on FB marketplace and took the bike back myself. But I don’t feel like a pair of AirPods are worth even worrying about—just get another pair, maybe some cheap knockoffs this time.

OP, I agree with everyone else posting here, but just FYI something very similar happened to me…someone mistakenly took my jacket instead of their own from a bar, and so they accidentally took my AirPods home with them. I also could see their address, which was also in a big apartment building. I had confidence that it was a drunken mistake and that the person would return my jacket to the bar, which they did a few days later. I had reported it to the bar, so they knew to call me, and I went and got my jacket and AirPods. Just wanted to give you a positive story.

First, you figure out how this happened, like what mistake you made that let something you care about so much out of your sight for so long. Did you trust a locker, did you not check your pockets, et cetera, then don’t make this mistake again.

You probably should have talked to the manager at the gym first before filing the police report. Did you lose them or do you think they were stolen from you? Either way, it's been a week and now they are dead. You may as well get a new pair because even if the police take the address and go, the person will probably say they don't have them and they aren't going to arrest them over some airpods. Just suck it up and get a new pair and be careful

Buy a pair of $7.99 wired earbuds at CVS. They can get stolen (lol)/lost/short out 20 times and you've still spent less replacing them than what you'll spend on new Airpods.

An office I worked in had 8 laptops stolen. The thief broke a password on one and ordered a bunch of physical gift cards for restaurants through our company Amazon account. He entered his real name and mailing address. Oh, and we had security cam footage of his face.

So, thousands in company property stolen, thousands more on gift cards, the face, name and address of the thief made available. Police did nothing. Nothing at all. We got no computers back.

So, good luck with your AirPods but they are gone. Be more careful in the future.

The second I lost my AirPods, I tracked them on my phone. You can track AirPods and you get them to make a really loud noise.

I found them my baby cousin’s toy box. They fell in there when I was cleaning up her toys.

But I guess you have to do it as soon as you notice so the battery doesn’t run out?

The manager is correct for not giving you access to video and confidential info about members. It could mean serious trouble for the company and violates its customers. What if they gave someone your address and phone number because they claimed that you stole from them?

It sucks that you lost something of value but you need to accept that they are gone and be more careful in the future. The police definitely don’t care about someone losing their AirPods.

you know what i would do? go up to the police station where you filed the report, tell them you know where the airpods are and that you request police escort. this happened to me when someone stole my phone once and they were there just as an escort but when the thief saw the cops with me they gave it back instantly.

Tell the police the address they were pinging from and then ask the police to ask the gym which members live at that addy.
