I bought out my lease and need to transfer my registration to my name, but my last trip to the RMV was a nightmare. You can’t make an appointment for this! Does anyone have any not so terrible experiences with any RMV locations recently? Open to driving within a half hour of Boston….

I did it at Haymarket. It's a pretty simple procedure if you have all your paperwork in order (you have the title signed over, letter indicating the purchase price, etc.). The hardest part is getting an appointment. You can either spend a portion of your day hitting that refresh button for your RMV of choice, or get an instant appointment a couple of hours west..

I can’t figure out how to get a reservation for this! I only see the option for an out of state transfer…

Show up at 7:45am and wait outside til they open at 9am. This was my strategy this past Tuesday. I was the first one inside (second person inside showed up at 8:15am). There was some waiting involved, but I was on my way with everything done by 9:45am.

Given this info I'd show up at 8:15...I showed up at 8:30 recently in Milford and was 3rd in line out by 9:45

I did this but decided to go to the RMV in Braintree because I figured it would be less busy and had parking. I was not able to book an appointment online so I called them and was on hold for 2.5 hours. There wasn’t really any other way I could find to get an appointment. Once I was able to talk with a real person I ran through all the documents to make they sure they were filled out correctly and they scheduled me for the next day. It was pretty quick when I got to the RMV, waited about 15 min for my appointment and the actual appointment was like 10 min.

So you’re saying if I’m patient and call I can get an appt? I think I’d rather be on hold at home than wait in line at the RMV…

I would think so. If I ever need to go back to the RMV I plan to call again to try to get an appointment bc their website seems unable to make any appointments from my experience. I personally preferred to call and be on hold at home and be able to do things with the call going in the background rather than wait in line there.

Watertown was my go-to RMV for decades, but the appointment system has brought it down a bunch of notches. I made an appt to get something done at 2 in the afternoon a couple of months ago, and the line of people waiting for walk in transactions was a couple of dozen people long. Right as my time was called and I went in, the representative came out to let everyone in that line know there would be no walk in appointments.

Try leominster, you wont believe the difference from watertown You will be out in 15 minutes. So you can wait in waterown for 2 hours or head out to leominster and be back home before your number is called. lol The drive from boston is more than 30 minutes but its not a bad ride out route2. I used to live in brighton and watertown was a nighmare for anything.

Can the dealer where you bought the car handle it? I’ve never done a lease, but the last time I bought a car, the dealer handled the transfer of registration for me. It couldn’t hurt to ask.

I asked them - because I bought it at the end of my lease through the finance company they refused to help me

Get AAA, and they have their own RMV services. They have an office in the financial district. I got my license easily, haymarket RMV was a nightmare in comparison.

If this is the only reason to join AAA, it would be worth it. Look into whether the service you're looking for is covered by their branches and sign up.
