I'm an older guy that last had a console when the Super Nintendo was released, as I went PC and have been gaming for years on that platform since.
I don't have a ton of disposable income, so I try to make my money last, and have been bored with a lot of the new games out on pc, so I've been thinking about getting an older generation of console, something I can get a lot of games for cheap yet still has ok graphics that could have me playing a year or more on catching up on tons of games I missed out on (non multi-player I would assume for older games).
I play rpgs, arpgs, mmos, some light first person shooters as I'm old don't have the reaction time I once did and muscel memory isn't trained as easily anymore.
Just thinking to go for a PS2 or 3 maybe or the first or second Gen Xbox but I never paid enough attention to the differences to know what would probably be the optimal choice for around $250 total and get me around 20 decent older games to spend a few hundred hours on at least.

Why not go for something like the Xbox Series S? It is in your budget, is a powerful little console, gets you the bells and whistles of next gen, and - if purchased through the Microsoft store since it’s all digital - can play older games.
The only bummer about the XSS is the fact that it’s all digital, so if getting old used games is important to you, perhaps you look at an Xbox One or a 360! :)
Happy gaming!
