Poll (bet): Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be less or more powerful than an high-end smartphone with a Snapdragon Gen 2 chipset?

I bet it will be less powerful than a current high-end smartphones and built on an older fabrication process, like 7/8 nm, because Nintendo will want to sell it at the same 299$ price point while gaining money from it, together with 8GB of RAM and 64/128GB of disk space, and it will be passively cooled (no more noisy fan, just a quiet heatsink). I'm not sure that it will include DLSS technology because it would be an added cost. It will be anyway striking and it will retain the same form factor (because it's ideal), but hopefully with reworked and sturdier Joy-Con, and with a somewhat larger display (thanks to thinner bezels). What's your bet/take?

Nintendo don’t tend to focus on power, as long as it has enough power to port current gen games over and it stays compact and cheap to produce they will be happy. I can see them using a overclocked Tegra 2 with 128gb internal memory and 8/16gb of ram.

A Tegra 2 with 16 GB of RAM would be a waste; also, RAM is pricey. But they need new technology to sell the new hardware, even if cheap technology.

How do you believe a tegra 2 would be a waste? Or do you mean paired with 16gb? I personally think it will be 8/16gb and they will choose to go with a similar soc to the tegra. They have a tendency to go cheap but streamlined. As long as the games they create are incrementally better quality then the current switch it will be progress for Nintendo. 4k dlss 2.0 is the goal.

A Tegra 2 paired with 16 GB. It's so low performance that has little sense. It also would be quite expensive. 4k DLSS isn't Tegra 2 range.

Some people do like hardware too. I always liked technology, for example. Hopefully it will have the same good support of the Nintendo Switch.

Likewise, but Nintendo is a business and their primary interest is making money. Most people hand their money over for great games, often with no clue about the technology involved.

Most, probably, still there are hardware passionates, and those are a moltitude. Me do like hardware as if it would be a work of art. It's like for games, they are two different types of human's expression.

I think my initial comment is the same view Nintendo will have. As long as there is (just) enough power to do what they want with it then it's adequate. It'll likely pull in a decent profit for them without it needing to be a powerhouse.

Still, you need more performance to have new games, otherwise you will have rehashes of the same games and people will bore out.

They may go down the Steamdeck route and use an AMD processor. Or they will use a custom mobile chipset that's in the ballpark of the Snapdragon gen 2.

Well, I like my current Nintendo Switch, I suppose that I would like anything better than just an overclocked Tegra 2. If it will be like just a Wii (an overclocked GameCube) I would be quite deluded, like I was with the Wii (I find every other Nintendo console cool). Steam Deck looks bulky, somewhat unattractive.

You can have 60 fps with any console, it only depends by the speed/quality ratio decided by the developer. I'm good with 30, though. It's the sub-30, the stuttering, the biggest letdown, in my opinion.

A Switch is much larger and therefore much easier to cool than a smartphone. Therefore it doesn't really require an expensive, high-end smartphone chipset. The Nvidia Tegra is a different story and not really comparable to the modern Snapdragons.

I also believe Nintendo will switch to AMD for a cheaper, smaller chipset, but still actively cooled. They don't need to compete with Sony and Microsoft hardware wise, but the Switch definitely needs a jump in performance which should be doable cheaply that way. And a chipset like this will still be better and cheaper than a Snapdragon.

Wel, eventually it will not need to throttle down like phones. AMD has no expertize with ARM. nVidia also said in the past that the deal with Nintendo would have been 20 years long. Snapdragon it's really strong, like a top-end Intel mobile offering, in the GPU side.

Good point. It's certain that the technology and market are changing rapidly at the moment. Didn't know about the 20 year deal, that would mean that a Tegra 2 or maybe a further development is almost a certainty.

If you see at what for example Apple is currently doing with it's M1 and M2 chips a lot is possible now that was never expected to be before.

Yes. nVidia do privide also software tools that Qualcomm or others have not in their portfolio. I suppose it will be a new consumer Tegra (X3?).

The Snapdragon SoC is well known in the chipset world but lately, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has been known to create a consistent performance issue. The chipset is said to have been creating problems with consistency issues in sustained intense performance. Don’t really know if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be any different or not.

Im not so sure I agree with some of this. They absolutely need to focus on power cause at this point you can emulate switch games and have a better gaming experience on a mobile device. Couple that with the Steam Deck and no im not comparing them and understand the difference in pricing, games and experience but nonetheless its more competition in the mobile gaming market. I know everyone thinks they like the 300 dollar price but AMD/SS has some new chips coming out that could really be beneficial for them to. Basically it comes down to this, they will either need to beef up or offer 2 versions from the get-go not years later. Switch 2 (OLED standard 350) and Switch 2 Deluxe (500). The former being the semi pathetic maybe tiny bit better (or worse) than the SD8 G2 the other rocking the new RDNA 2/Exynos (hopefully 3) mobile chips. That was me dreaming but lets say Nintendo being Nintendo does what Nintendo usually does and that's stick to the formula that worked so great last time. Before I continue I say we not forget they went with Nvidia cause they probably stole those X1 chips I mean Team Green had tons left over and they have stopped giving two crap about upgrading the ARM stuff. That said lets say they do stay with Nvidia I pray they see that its not a risk (not profitable) now and make a whole new chip and not use their Drive cards (orin possibly Thor) with Lovelace and get that beautiful DLSS which should by all accounts push it into 4K no problem docked. They HAVE to make one of these choices! Anbody who can tell me the Switch isn't already ancient and running some of these ports so badly you get a refund you'd be a liar. They need to avoid that this time and invest into cloud to compensate as well. To bad we didn't let Microsoft do their thing and crucified them instead cause I think cloud computing for consoles would be much further along.

I think that Nintendo gamers still want a light and comfortable console that would last long on battery, so focusing on power would be unwise. Piracy isn't really an argument. Anything can be emulated, but then you need to always respect those 15 watt requirements to make a fully portable console, or you end up with a Game Gear (trounced by Game Boy competition). Even the Steam Deck, that's conservative on power in respect to other makers, don't last long on battery.
