I'd say get a PS5 now since you seem to be more excited about the games. After a bit, get a Series S/X to regain access to your old library.

That's what I was thinking. Most my games on xbox are digital so a series s is what I was thinking later on. What do you think?

Makes sense to me. I’m going to get a Series S too just to play MCC. The OG Halos are my only tie to Xbox and I miss playing those.

Yes and a Switch. I went with the PS5 digital since I like not having a bunch of plastic game cases lying around 😊. I’m all digital on the Switch too.

The SSD expansion for PS5 is pretty easy to understand. There's a bunch of them that sell consistently for that purpose, and there's also an "official" one (the WD Black), that basically has a bit of PS branding on it (the same one minus the branding works just as well).

Because Sony left it open to generic drives, it's usually much cheaper compared to the Series consoles expansion card. I bought the 1TB Samsung 980 Pro (with built in heatsink) earlier this year for €160. The 1TB Series expansion card was sitting one shelf down from it for €250.

The upgraded for PS5 situation is also easy to understand - PS5 games have a PS5 tag, PS4 games have a PS4 tag. There's a few games that have what I call PS4.5 patches - performance upgrades for running on PS5, but it's still the native PS4 version. A quick Google will list these titles (although they are mostly the Sony first party games that don't have native PS5 versions, stuff like The Last of Us Part 2, God of War, Days Gone, Infamous Second Son, etc.). This also means you can leave those games installed to an external hard drive, as the Series "Smart" Delivery forces the game to be installed to the SSD, which becomes kinda annoying as your drive starts to fill up.

Tried Fallout but stopped, will try to get into it later on. Haven't tried skyrim. Also, if I am interested in any bethesda exclusives I could always play it on my xbox 1 s or gamepass.

Depends on how it runs on PS4 to begin with. For games with framerate issues like say Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro, it'll run them pretty much locked at 60FPS by virtue of having a much better CPU, but there's no patching or change to the game itself, the PS5 is basically "brute forcing" the game to run better (these games behave the same way on Series X)

If the game has a PS4 Pro version, it'll run that version (usually at its max target resolution and framerate).

There's basically no difference between running discs and digital as the latest version is contained in updates and all games are installed to the SSD anyways.

Yep, just like internal storage. In theory it might even be a bit faster than the PS5's SSD.

If you have an external hard drive, you can run PS4 games from it, and use it as cold storage for PS5 games too.

Xbox

If you're looking to expand your library, get the PS5. Xbox Series doesn't have any games that are current gen exclusives yet so you still have access to the entire library with your current hardware. You just don't have the graphic upgrades. I think xbox is getting its 1st current gen exclusive this month but it doesn't look like anything special and its also on Playstation 5.

The PS Plus Premium subscription actually has more games than Game Pass and it's a lot cheaper. However, it doesn't have the day one games and the PS3 library can only be streamed. It does come with almost all of the Sony exclusives you missed out on with the exception of the new releases from this year so you can get caught up.

I recommend researching release dates for upcoming xbox console exclusive games that you are interested in. If you find some, try to budget so that you can afford a Series S or X. There's not many but some will be shaking loose 2023, I think.

Or you can play the long game if you don't see anything that's a "must have" and save up for a PC since it gives you access to the Xbox games, PC games and also mods.

I use Xbox Game Pass on PC and PS Plus Premium on PS5. I haven't needed to fire up my Xbox for any reason.

PS5 has all the good exclusives. That should be your primary one to go after. The Xbox will eventually go down in price in a few years, I'd say grab that after the drop.

Yup. Halfway during a console lifecycle they tend to drop in price. If you gotta grab one now, grab a PS5, the exclusives are way better, wait until the XBox price drops then nab it to (re)play your already owned library.

I have series x and in my opinion it’s way better then ps5 it may not have exclusive games but the only good one on ps5 is spiderman miles morales but they brought that to ps4 so get series x it has lots of storage it looks cool it is 4k and Xbox has been 4k way longer then play station I mean every game is 4k also you can play Xbox 360 games and Xbox one games on it so it’s just way better also the controllers work on a pc and you can play legacy versions of mincraft

Definitely buy a ps5. It has haptic feedback and vibration. Plus, Xbox barely gets any exclusive games in their catalog.

Recently I'm getting into more open world games and love the exclusives playstaion has. Plus if I ever wanted to play something on xbox whether that be exclusives or my old games I could always go back.

You mentioned PS5 exclusives. If you like what you see, get that.

I personally have both and mainly use the PS5 including for game purchases. I only use Xbox for GP day 1 releases, Halo MP (have the Halo Series X) and fps boosted games.

PS5 also has the Dualsense which has been absolutely amazing. Returnal is a game that is a treat on the system and is available on the PS Plus sub along with other exclusives.

Nope. Don’t forget that native PS5 games use kraken compression. Typically, games are smaller install sizes on PS5 than Series X. Also, because PS5 uses m.2 nvme SSD, you can buy any off the shelf ssd and install it yourself (needs to match or exceed PS5 specs). Costs have dropped drastically for these making them generally cheaper than the Series X option.

If you have the PS4 version you're free to download and play that from your external drive if you want. Perfect example is Elden Ring - the most performant way to play it was to run the PS4 version on PS5, and that's what I did. I still owned the PS5 version as well, and only download that for a look at a later date. If you tried to do this on a Series console, it would force you to play the Series-enhanced version.

What version you get is publisher dependent. Some will stick the PS4+PS5 versions together as one purchase, some will have seperate versions (I've noticed this does happen on Xbox as well), some are selective about what you have to buy (for Elden Ring I had to buy the PS4 version, which included the PS5, but didn't the other way around).

Yep, that's correct. If you have space to spare, you can also run PS4 games from the internal or SSD (there's a small improvement to loading with some titles in this scenario).

When you compare like for like PS5/Series X games, the PS5 is usually a little bit faster. A lot of the PS5 exclusives have pretty much instant loading.

Pretty much. Just for a comparison there (granted it's not perfectly like for like) I booted up PS4 AC Odyssey, and PS5 AC Valhalla.

From hitting "continue" on the title screen to being able to control your character, Odyssey took over a minute, Valhalla was 13 seconds.

Saints Row 3 Remaster took 8 seconds from pressing continue to being in the open world.

I haven't really done any side by side comparisons with the two consoles, but have watched a bunch of Digital Foundry videos. They're effectively the same - Series X will sometimes have slightly higher resolution but slightly lower framerate. In most cases you'd have to go through the games with a tooth comb to really see any differences
