So I've been thinking about buying a console and I'm looking for some advice.
I've been debating if I should buy a PS5 or a switch and was wondering which one you think is better. I only know one person who has a current generation console and it's a switch.
And which version on the console I should buy such as if I should buy the normal Switch or the Oled.
I also heard that if I buy a switch I would also need a memory cards if I download games since the system doesn't hold a lot of memory. Are there any other accesories that would be considered important.
Also I'm not in a rush to buy right now so I was wondering if there are time periods where I should expect better deals for consoles or if I should be worried about a next generation console coming out.

It depends on what games you like & where you like to play them. I love my Switch because it’s portable. On days like today when I’m stuck in bed due to chronic pain, Switch is the best. I have the normal version bc I don’t care much about graphics.

PS5 or series X (I have an X, however as far as I'm concerned they're basically the same. Get the one your gamer friends have). Switch is basically pointless once you've played BOTW.

What country are you in? That makes a difference re: getting stuff on sale.

Do you already have a gaming PC? What kinds of games/experiences are you looking for?

Depends on what games your interested in, your budget, and were your friends play. I am an xbox guy but plan on getting a ps5 even though I have friends on xbox since we mostly play crossplay games.

Both the PS5 and the Switch are great systems but very different and don’t really serve quite the same purpose.

The PS5 is much more powerful than the Switch, and therefore runs resource heavy games much more smoothly and reliably. Game updates and DLC releases also tend to happen in a much more timely manner on the PS5 than the Switch.

On the other hand the fact you can use the switch as a handheld is a huge plus. The touch screen is great, and as a handheld nothing beats it except the Steam Deck.

I would suggest you spend some time looking at the games catalogue of the respective systems, since there are a few games exclusive to each platform; and for cross platform games, read reviews on how the ones that most appeal to you play on each system. There will be differences.

There is no universal right answer. They are just different systems, so it depends what games you want, and how important handheld is to you versus performance

Switch if you care for games like Pokemon, Mario, …..

PS5 if you care for PS exclusive games

Xbox Series S if you want a budget console for a few games like CoD and Fifa or gamepass

Xbox series X for any other reason

(I have all of them, imo Series X is the best console if you don’t care for the ps exclusives. Switch and Series S are in a different position, because they serve a different purpose than the XSX and the PS5)

Xbox is best value because of game pass

Switch is old and games are expensive, but are amazing

Ps5 has some exclusives that are great (Xbox should have some amazing ones coming soon as well, though)

You mentioned you have a laptop, if you have any games on Steam a steam deck could suit you well? Handheld like a switch, but access to the same games as Xbox/PlayStation (well, MOST of the games available on PlayStation barring some exclusives. The majority of which are coming to steam/pc eventually.)

depends. Do you like games like mario, zelda, pokemon? get a switch. Are you into any of the playstation exclusives? Get a ps5. I have both and i enjoy them both but it's a matter of what games you like. Also something to consider is that switch games are still expensive and never go on sale
