Personally I am ok with either. The only problem I have with controllers sometimes is going from Nintendo's button lettering to Xbox's.

I’ve found that for any game that requires the d-pad regularly in very quick intervals having them like the Xbox controller can save so much hassle and reduce the loss of control while using it compared to other controllers

I voted for asymmetrical but it's not always a guaranteed thing. It just so happens that I largely use the left analog stick and the face buttons to play most games so it's comfortable having both my thumbs in the same spot.

I personally like the Xbox/ Switch Pro offset sticks, and the Wii U pro controllers stick placement was also comfortable to me. The Playstation controller was good back in the day we use the d pad more, but it's hard for me to get use to now.

Comes down to muscle memory, I use PS and Xbox but PS a lot more and I find the dpad awkward on Xbox

Offset is way more comfortable than semetrical plus you can turn the Xbox controler into a left handed one if you take off the shell and put it on the other way once you move the buttons and the joysticks you have a left handed controller

Nothing rules like symmetry

Depends on the controller.
I hated the 360 controller but swore by my good old playstation controller
But the Xbox one controller is so much nicer then the Dualshock 4.

how many people voting have used a wii u pro controller tho? (it's the best)

Honestly it's variable. The switch pro controller is the best first party controller hands down, but I have always preferred the PlayStation layout of symmetry, but I also use a 360 controller for PC games that need it.
It really all depends on the situation and the game you're playing and sometimes doesn't matter at all. For me it's more about the comfort and features then the stick placement. The 360 controller is the best most ergonomic controller ever and is always a joy to use minus the d-pad, the switch pro has the most features and is the best overall, and the PS4 controller is great for games that use the d-pad as much or more than the analog sticks, since they're out of the way when you don't need them and the d-pad is good. Even the Wii U and Steam controller's weird layout works in some situations, as the Wii U ends up being the same situation as the ps4, with a good d-pad you can use with the joysticks out of the way, just up instead of down. It just takes a little getting used to and some button remapping if you're not using it on a game optimized for it. And the steam controller is in a league of its own, being focused on the touchpads mimicking mouse input rather than joysticks, and with all the customization it offers creates its own special use case that can be unmatched if customized correctly, it's just a little extra work.
All in all each controller has its place, and while some may prefer one over the others because they like playing a specific type of game or simply are just used to the layout, having so many controllers and consoles has made me realize no layout is truly better than another.
Except the N64 controller. Fuck that thing.
