Not in my memory. As I recall 3dtv's where always regarded as a gimmick, at least where I'm from... Most people never even liked 3d at the cinema, and barely anybody bought one.

I think the main difference is, 3dtv was a dumb gimmick added on top of an already fine platform. (Don't fix what ain't broken). But VR is an entirely new platform, and it's very engaging

Probably true, but I don't care if it's mainstream, so long as it's still available and supported I will be happy
