Online services will shut down eventually. And if you don't have all the content you paid for downloaded to your machine then you will lose it forever. Having a disc / cart slot is always better than not. You can always just buy digital versions of games and not use disks.

Are discs not just download keys nowadays anyway? If online gets shut down disc is useless.

Most newer consoles won't work after the services shut down without hacking them anyway.
