Hello,

I am shopping for a new console and I like XBOX series S (as alternative to second hand PS4 Slim for the same price).

But what worries me is, how to buy games? Is XBOX Store the only option? For example Crash Bandicoot costs almost 70 eur/usd there! Is there any alternative? If not, then second hand PS4 Slim is much more cheaper in overall costs.

I also looked at game pass, but it is also not worth it if I want to have 2-3 games and one must be Crash Bandicoot (for my wife :D)

Thank you

That's right. You'll be a slave to digital sales if you have a console without a drive. Even when digital games are on sale, they're still more expensive than used (and sometimes new) physical copies are all year long.

Dark Souls 3 with DLC is 6 years old. It's $20 new at Walmart or you can pay $80 online. Just an example. If you look, you can find used physical copies of games under $10 at thrift stores, yard sales or even borrow/trade with friends or work colleagues. I found a stack of PS4/Xbox One games for $1 each at Goodwill over the summer. Digitally, they were each between $40 - $60 and I can sell/trade them.

Think about how long you'll have (and use) the console you're buying. In that time frame, you're likely to actually save money (and have a more powerful system) by having a console that accepts physical copies. I strongly recommend the PS5 w/ disc drive or Xbox Series X. If you have a PC, then I'd go with PS5 just because PC has access to all of the Xbox games.

Thank you, then most probably I will go with Xbox series X, my budget was 300 eur for second hand PS4, but it is worth to add 200 eur extra to save on games overall and have more powerful 4k console. PS5 is not in stock in my country and if I find some shop that has it, it is 700+ eur

I think that's the right call for your situation. It's a better system and it will likely be more affordable in the long run than the Series S.

nah... ,sorry, I am changing my mind after watching some more reviews and finding a good deal for 229eur for series S, this console will be enough for me and my wife. The only pullback is price of Crash Bandicoot, but other games can be bought on sale under 20eur, which is not that much in the end.

I found GTA V for 15, old NFS for 3.99eur, Mafia: definitive edition: 13.99 etc...

Not sure if the site works where you are but you can buy xbox digital game codes cheaper than the xbox store through third party sites like CD Keys. I buy lots of codes this way as having digital codes allows me to switch between the series x and series s we have in our house. Crash Bandicoot is less than €30 on there currently

I think you might be able to get digital codes on sale at Amazon and Best Buy. Otherwise its the MS store.

The main reason that I got the X was the disc drive. Sometime there is a special edition of a game that I like and I just have to get the physical instead of the digital.

Well hope this doesnt break any rules, but just like on PC, you can purchase your Games from discount sites and get better deals on games you want.

I use kinguin personally and greenman gaming.

BUT... if you have have xbox Gamepass... you will have access to more games then you need.
PLUS
If you do join xbox gamepass... you get awesome discounts on games just from being a member! :)

Buying digital is going to be the new normal so may as well accept it. There are many big sales throughout the year with smaller weekly sales on Xbox live store. Black Friday Sale right now and lots of great deals. I have a Series X but it's all digital for me.
