Switch would be a good introduction to gaming. And you can’t go wrong with Mario kart.

Can you play 2 players on the same console in online matches?

Split screen and online with others.

You need a membership to play online but it's only like 20 dollars per year, way cheaper than Sony's or Microsoft's offerings

Im on the fence between Xbox and Switch, but the only game I can think of is as you mentioned Mario Kart for switch are there many other games suitable for the younger kids?

Xbox had me interested as it has Minecraft and Roblox which also are hugely popular games for young kids.

Mario kart is suitable, and the switch also has Minecraft and I think it has Roblox too. I’d say go with the switch, personally

The switch does not have roblox, fairly certain roblox signed a deal with xbox to not have it on any other console

In my opinion the Xbox’s value for money proposition is excellent and arguably unrivalled when it comes to Xbox Games Pass. For a low monthly fee you have an unbelievable choice of top games to play and they’re updated all the time.

The Switch I still feel though would be better suited for the age range you’re talking about. Being able to play it on the go in the car etc (hopefully they share! Although something to consider on the flip side, maybe it’s good for a console to stay at home if you don’t want them playing too much) , and I feel like the games themselves are more tailored to that age.

Alongside Mario Kart there’s the likes of Pokémon, Luigi’s Mansion, Paw Patrol, Super Mario World, Minecraft, splatoon, donkey kong, Mario tennis, sonic, Zelda, the Lego games, Spyro, the list goes on.

Alright, mainly stationary for home at the TV.

Would 2 controllers be enough or would I have to go for an extra two?

It comes included with a controller or you can slide the sides out and it can be used as two joy sticks. You could probably just start with that and then see if another full size control would be useful down the line.

I would say switch, I had Nintendo in the past and now have xbox. The switch has a lot more games for kids their ago and when they are older you can get them an xbox in how ever many years and the switch doesn't have very many tiles that aren't appropriate for there ago were as the xbox does. They both have mincraft and sure the xbox does have roblox but the switch had all the different Mario games. In the end the switch is more appropriate for their age but the xbox is more future proof.
