I don't play solo almost at all. I want something for multilayer on my tv when friends come over, not very expensive. Which console would you suggest?

I could also do with emulators on an Android box, if there's anything powerful enough to play at least some PS2 games.

Xbox Series S with game pass is inexpensive and powerful enough for modern games + very easy to hack to play PS2 games

Yes and it's doesn't require anything that could get your Xbox account banned. Search for Gamr13 Series S or X emulation. It's a little fiddly to set up, but I've been playing PS2 games really well.

You could set up a raspberry pi with RetroPie.

Sadly nothing is inexpensive these days.

I believe the Nintendo switch has a price low enough now that even building a retro pie or getting a non-junk android game box becomes almost a waste of money.

What does an Xbox Series S go for?

You could also grab some old micro business pc cast off and load one of the many linux flavors for emulation. Then grab a few controllers and you're good.

But again the costs start getting close to an official console... I guess the big question is what is your budget?

I checked the price on series S because someone wrote in another comment that you can hack-install emulators. It seems fine it's around 250-300 euro. So I will check the tutorials and see... I guess if it's easier than a pie and cheaper than a Business PC it's worth it since I will also be able to play modern games and have controllers and stuff already setup.

Once you hack it you can't play any modern games as they ALL require internet connectivity and all the hacks I know of brick/ban internet connection for them.

RetroPie is super easy to set up, but the Pi is a hot commodity right now.

It doesn’t require any kind of hacking and it can run emulators. Look up Xbox dev mode retroarch

Most of miniPC with emulators will do their thing, and if you don't need wireless gamepads, yo mqy alwqys get cheap usb knockoffs like Manta or Esperanza products.
