I just bought a ps5 and while I haven’t opened it, from seeing gameplay footage on YouTube I’m quite shocked how a $500 console is able to perform better than PCs ever close to that budget range! My PC that I build in 2018 has an rtx 2070 and an i7 9700k, and I’m quite sure it would never reach the performance levels of this device. How did these companies do it?

Both Microsoft and Sony sell them at a loss and make up for it through the subscriptions so the hardware is better than you probably think

Not only that, but unlike pc, you only need to design your game for those specs, so its far easier to fully optimize and use the consoles to their fullest (Red Dead 2 from last gen is a good example)

And its often not true 4k, just upscaled, even higher end pcs struggle to do 4k with a nice and stable high fps on intensive games, just like the last point, its often very crafty tricks devs will use to make things seem better than they are, take Witcher 3 for example with the next gen version

A lot of the console games use adaptive resolution to maintain framerate so yes not true 4k though several games have a quality mode which maintains resolution at expense of framerate.

I didn't say it doesn't, but a lot of games are not running in 4k a lot of the time. They use dynamic resolution to maintain framerate.

A lot of the games on the Xbox series x can take advantage of native 4K 120fps, they optimize themselves for it because there is only one xsx, and they know they can make a lot of money if they fully take advantage of the xsx

Sure some games do. But often only in quality mode at 30fps. If you want 60fps then any 3D game with reasonable visuals is going to be running dynamic resolution.

I never need to turn on quality mode, my Xbox series x runs at 4K 120fps on a lot of the games I play, it usually only get lower when I play games released before the Series x was launched

What games are you playing? Because most of the big titles are not running at 4k in performance mode such as Halo, Forza Horizon 5 and Cyberpunk 2077 to name a few.

Mostly Elden Ring and Fortnite, Elden Ring is a power hungry game.

Edit: if you didn’t know, Forza Horizon 5 was the poster child for the consoles power, they featured if in the promotions and I played it, at native 4K 120 fps.

Elden ring is only 4k in quality mode. It uses dynamic resolution in performance mode.

I'm not playing it at all. The info is from Digital Foundry and is based on the Series X and PS5. In both cases it does not do 4k 60fps.

Never mind, it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between 120 fps and 60 fps, I was wrong that it can run 120 fps, and my settings in my console said I was running 120, but I guess I wasn’t, but Elden Ring can still run 4K 60 fps, pretty smoothly, though I must have turned on quality mode at some point

It can probably do 4k 60 if there's not very much going on but if there's any kind of movement, action, fighting etc.. It won't be at 4k.

Honestly 4k 60 is very demanding. I have a gaming PC that cost 4x as much as my Series X and it would struggle to maintain 60fps at 4k in those games too.

I was in the radahn festival while recording the frame rate, that is probably the most things on screen at once, and I was actively fighting, I played through my first playthrough entirely on 4K 60fps with no issues

You cannot have been because the game simply doesn't do that on a Series X. It would have been dynamically changing the resolution to maintain that framerate.

You go into settings, and you set a resolution, Xbox generally sacrifices frame rate before resolution, and even on quality mode, Xbox likes to keep resolution the same, and if it does change, like in the middle of an intense battle, I check the settings every couple of minutes, staying at 4K

The resolution you've selected in the Xbox setting does not mean the games you are playing are output in that resolution. According to Digital Foundry's tests, performance mode on Elden Ring can result in resolution being scaled down to as low as 2688x1512 and frame rates can vary between 45 and 60 FPS.

Digital Foundry have been involved in a lot of controversy, and not whenever I check anywhere about digital foundry, it’s telling me they are biased, I used to believe in digital foundry, but I don’t anymore, if you have a different source other than digital foundry that shows the same results I’ll believe you, but I don’t trust something so deep in controversy

You can just Google is "Does Elden Ring run at 4k in performance mode" to get your answer. Plenty of sources will tell you the same thing. And since your method of measurement is your xbox settings I'm inclined to say you don't actually know what you're talking about here.

The Series X is impressive kit, but it is not going to run high fidelity 3d games at 4k 60fps and no one sensible would claim it does.

Because of the optimisation and power of the console, I know it may come as a shock but these consoles aint no slouch. They can stand up quite straight and face games head-on. Yes, they're £450 but you need to bare in mind Microsoft and sony sell them at a heavy loss and make money back through games/online memberships etc.

No I think you're dead on.

There can be hundreds or even thousands of PC combinations.

There's only one PS5, and only one XSX. The CPU memory and GPU are all known quantities and can be developed towards.

Console manufacturers have also been known to withhold the true spec/capabilities of a machine and then update the developers throughout the console's life cycle. This is how you get better looking games year after year on the same hardware.

They can also, in the case of the PS vita hand held, withhold or reserve a certain amount of system capacity for later expansions or software updates, that they can give back to the developers if/when they decide they don't actually need it.

They don't. Atleast not all the time anyway. A lot of upscaling and dynamic resolution trickery is used by consoles to get heavy games like Warzone 2 to run at "4K". PC games have these options too with tech like Nvidia DLSS. Rendering the game internally at a lower resolution and then using AI to help upscale it back to 4K, with varying degrees of quality. Some people won't notice the differences compared to native 4K, others will.

So it's not a guaranteed "true" 4K with every game on consoles. But even when upscaling tricks are used, it's close enough for most people.

They don't - very few games run at 4K/60, they are often upscaled from lower resolutions or have dynamic resolution.

This is all wrong. In 95% of cases, both consoles drop the resolution close to 1080p to hit their performance modes.

There are very few examples of fully featured games hitting 60 fps with native 4K output.

You also drop ray tracing with a 60 fps output. PCs with 30-series GPUs far outperform these consoles.

Xbox series s runs upscaled 4K at 120fps, or comfortably runs at native 1440p, my friend has never noticed a dip in resolution and he has had a series s since launch day, i personally have a Xbox series x and comfortably run at native 4K 120fps on very demanding titles, I dont know what performance breakdowns you watched, but I’ve had my series x for 6 months and have noticed no dips.

triple A games DO NOT run native 4K 120 - they don’t run native 4K 60.

Your series x won’t even run ray tracing above 30 fps.

1440p is the highest resolution they might achieve with dynamic resolution not only rarely hitting the target, but often dropping below 1080p in high burden situations.

You know regardless of target resolution, these consoles rarely hit 1440p in performance mode.

Aren’t the components inside also specially made for the consoles? I feel like I read an article before this gen came out that they get parts at a deal because they custom design them with the company that makes them and then buys them at such a huge stock for a reasonable price to help keep costs down.
