My wife is talking about getting me a new console come tax season - she justifies it because I don't buy myself nice, new stuff. Like, ever. The last console I got was a Super Slim PS3 when we got married, and that was because it was used, with a bunch of games, for $100. I bought her a 360 several years later, same situation. The age is definitely showing though.

She's mentioned either getting a PS5 or a new XBox, but I'm wary. I know both have their pros and cons, but I've used both Xbox and PS systems since their dawns. They both have features I like, and features I dislike.

One other note - I have young kids, and it would be cool to be able to have a family friendly game that I can fire up, that isn't too complicated for young brains, that isn't gonna frustrate a mature gamer brain.

What recommendations would you suggest, and why?

ETA: I'm not so interested in online features, I'm almost 40 and don't need to be reminded how much I suck at whatever game by a bunch of kids talking sh*t to each other lol. I also have a small collection of Xbox, X360, PS2 and PS3 games, mostly fighting, shooting, racing, and of course Elder Scrolls games.

I’ve been an Xbox fanboy forever but picked up a ps5 last year and could not be happier. I’m also 40 with a 9 year old son and we have a blast with it! We play anything from Minecraft to It Takes Two. PS5 for sure!

No. It's a digital only console. If you want to play older gen Xbox games, you'd need an Xbox Series X and even then, only some are backwards compatible. Here's a good list of them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_backward-compatible_games_for_Xbox_One_and_Series_X/S

If you are more interested in PS5, it will play PS4 discs but not PS1, PS2, PS3 (if you get the disc version).

I have both the Series X and PS5 and play the PS5 more mainly because of the DualSense. It's a game changer in my opinion but it may not be for everyone. Good luck!

If you have old 360/One games definitely go for the Xbox Series X. I only had PlayStation, until this gen. Due to lower prices, difficulties to find a PS5, design preferences and GamePass Ultimate I just got a XSX and I couldn’t be happier.

I switched from Xbox one S to the PS5 this gen and I love it. The exclusives are really nice and the dual sence is really cool in games that support it. With PlayStation plus you get access to “PlayStation plus collection” and it includes a few PS4 titles that sold really good on PS4(I never had a PS4). The series X is also really amazing for gamepass and you get auto HDR and a FPS boost in older games. Both are amazing. Can’t go wrong with either or.

One more question: do either console require some sort of online membership or whatever, to do basic 1P or split screen?
