It is finished 😄 I intended for the picture to appear rough and unfinished

Why, please help me understand? I see this a lot on Reddit. I never quite see it as helping the content, or expression of the piece. I see it as just lazy. When I see the white of the gessoed canvas, I wonder why the artist didn’t attempt to place a color or value. It’s like a half cooked meal or an unfinished poem.

It's called Non-Finito and It's a stylistic choice. It may imply to the viewer that the artist painted this quick, like He was overcome by the idea and just wanted to put it on paper before the idea went away.

It's also an intriguing because it engages the Imagination of the viewer. They try to complete it in their mind or try to imagine what might fill the empty areas. This can be seen as a way to Connect the artist and the viewer.

That’s the cool thing about art- it’s meant to be open for interpretation and to elicit different feelings and thoughts from the viewer. Not everyone will understand or enjoy the same type and that’s okay. Largely it’s a reflection on the artist more than anything else.
