Can’t believe I still remember this poem from high school German class

One of my favorites in general. I love Goethe.

Middle school for me. Herr Nielsen had us memorize both that, and Wilhelm Tell.

How did you memorize Wilhelm Tell, it's a whole play?!

MacadamiaMarquess t1_iu8x3wg wrote

Lots and lots of in class repetition for multiple years.

And my memory is sketchy, but it may only have been select scenes. I’m looking at the page count now and I’m doubting that we performed all 210 pages.

Our last year of middle school we performed at least a portion of the play in a local German language competition that was mostly high school participants. In theory we only had to memorize our own lines, but most of the main character actors knew most of the other characters’ lines, too, for whatever portion we performed.

EDIT: I expect most (native speaker) adult performers of it have nearly the whole thing memorized, though. Props to them.

Awesome! :P

Stable Diffusion? There are no reflections in the water, something an AI would certainly omit, while an artist would not.

The resolution is also quite low, you can see artifacts really easily

I wish people would add that to their title or as a flair tbh. AI art can be pretty cool but I'd like to know when it is AI or not.

Oh man, I LOVE this. It brings me back to university when I was studying opera and we were studying German lieder in music history, this was one of my favourite Schubert pieces! That final line of the poem of “In seinen Armen das Kind war tot” was SO well set.

LHandrel t1_iu95xzl wrote

It was one of my favorite pieces in my gen-ed music history class, as well. There are plenty of versions but I'm very fond of the one we were shown, and have it in my regular music library.

Link for anyone who wants to listen, same performance but with animation for anyone easily bored or wanting a visualization.

If you want to get your mind blown check out Hilary Hahn playing this piece for solo violin.

It’s an inhuman level of polyphony for a violin

Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?

I really used to love this poem, but I never managed to learn the ending of it.

Edit: I love Reddit formatting.

I wouldn't translate the german use of Erlkönig to elf king. The origin is actually danish and its still unknown if it was an translation error to use Erlkönig or if it was intended to use it (because alders (german: Erlen) are present in wetlands, the area where elves are from). While it does reference to elves, Erlkönig does not directly translate to elf king

AI generated art, perhaps with a little human editing, like adding the glowing eyes.

Looks like MidJourney.

Yes this artpiece was created through a couple cycles on AI. Nightcafe, in particular.

Could have probably included that in the title, in hindsight.
