Nicely done OP. Regardless of technique, you’ve got creativity, which can’t be taught. Bravo and - please - keep it up!

Good stuff man. Everyone starts somewhere and this is a really good start, take time and enjoy the learning process.
I started on my own and sorta beat my face against the wall until I got better at it. So I hope this helps you.

  1. Break things down into shapes, it will help keep your work more consistent. You can draw the shapes lightly as a guide and erase them later if you wish, also look at the texture of things when you're out and about.
  2. Play around with angling the pencil lead when drawing, different angles can give different shapes and effects. Some artists even just draw straights lines or circles to get better at drawing straight lines
  3. This is purely a style thing but when drawing hair you can keep the hair flowing down or in a direction but making the lines all in the same direction. Tho you can keep doing your thing cos this style of hair as a neat grunge vibe.
  4. When drawing things you want to looks scary or gross drawing the gums of teeth can really sell that vibe.

The fact that you can do it is far less impressive than the fact that you can envision it.

Art is deeply personal and always magic.

Why do ppl do the “I know I suck” posts or “I know I look horrible” posts? If you actually think you’re unskilled you do not post shit online to be scrutinized by a bunch of strangers ..So quit phishing for compliments

Some people need encouragement. I was gifted this sketchbook and am excited to share with the artists I look up to, even though objectively my art is novice at best. People are complex creatures, don’t assume so much.

I actually like the style of this.

"Sucking ass" is fine when you start. It's step one. Ask a guitar player about their first time playing a C chord. It probably hurt but now is like breathing.

With some refinement I think you probably have some talent here.

Is that a hand plant. Has that big mother fucker Rocco been feeding them scraps from the garbage again. I swear, Jerry burnt all of them last week and there up again.

Rylonian t1_j40fyrm wrote

You don't suck. There's actually a strong hint at talent in there imho. Something about the way you drew the hand, nose and certain elements like the ears. Also, traces of shading.

Great work op. My honest advice is to stop using the hard lines and instead use cross hatching to imply lines. Once you do that your drawings will pop a little more.

No, you’re not bad at all. In fact that hand is really good. It’s not proportionate or anything but the structure is there. You have alot of raw talent mate, refine it and you could be exceptional

1

GoGreenD t1_j41u4h7 wrote

It doesn't suck ass. It's your current style, which you haven't learned to appreciate because you've just started. Keep at it, don't pursue other styles. Hone in on what you want it to look like.

What would make this "suck" less? What did you do "wrong"? Asses it, and have another go.

2

horizontalExposure t1_j41vx0n wrote

Bud, you need to reevaluate what you consider "good". Yeah, if you're going for hyper-realism this ain't where it's at. But I'll tell you now Mike Mignola would proudly publish that in any Hellboy comic you care to check out.

No problem, and actually you can turn this into a good study, that’s very close to the bone structure, add like about the same width to each side of the finger and that will account for the musculature and skin. Like I said, lots of raw talent!

SkoolBoi19 t1_j42k95o wrote

Well you started with some of the hardest things to draw (hands and faces). And to be honest, the hand is a solid start, add some shading and it will really increase the quality. The face has some proportion issues but this is a great foundation. I’d say keep pushing.

Went to college for fine arts.
