There should be a similar disclaimer at the top of nearly every political map or chart. Doesn't mean it's useless, it means that the world is a complex and multi-faceted place and disclaimers are a good way of reminding people of that.

The EIU is pretty good, there's nothing obviously better (that I know of).

Having said that, of course you should be always be aware that every ranking like this will have a degree of bias, as OP reminds us.

Perhaps. At least OP has the courtesy to responsibly state the context as-is. Most don't, and most people don't question it.
