How on Earth did you get 23 interviews on 27 applications? And then 20 offers from 23 interviews??? Even if I'm applying to like McDonalds a few of the postings are old or they don't see my application or something

Teach me the way, sensei

I have no fucking idea. I really don’t. My resume is bangin though (I think) and I tailor each to each app?? I also think that somehow the job market in horticulture is really good right now. Don’t know why that would be or if it’s true, but kind of seems like it from my experience

Edit: My intel from 80% of these jobs is that they haven’t gotten a lot of quality applicants. For whatever reason.

That would have been my guess, although it’s a bit mean IMO, but according to my grandfather it’s “tink". I’m not sure it really translates now that classy people don’t use silly euphemisms so much.

Any chance you could create a template/example resume based off of the one you use? I would love to build mine similarly

7

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8g52en wrote

I honestly would but the next couple weeks are going to be fucked getting ready and I don’t think I’ll have time. I use a simple word format with one small left column for contact, skills, and qualifications, and the bigger right column for work experience and education. I don’t use any of those weird rating widgets because I hate them but I know they’re popular now. I honestly think employers in my industry would find them irritating

Thanks for your response! I hope your next few weeks go smoothly

You used 27 different resumes ?

3

lotus-o-deltoid t1_j8iqm37 wrote

This is pretty standard once you have unique skill sets. You highlight your relevant experience depending on how their job posting was phrased and the company culture.

7

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8iuxax wrote

Exactly this. I have super broad experience so it just doesn’t make sense to use the same resume. Also yeah they just wanna see that you’re a good fit for that specific role

In 2019-2020 I put out 2 applications, got 2 interviews, and got 2 offers. I’ve probably put out like 10 applications ever.

That was me before this year. Just put a couple out and go with it lol

My job search in a major city with COL 10% higher than national average. Highlighted cell is my current position salary. I over-applied because I didn't realize the extent of my qualifications. I used SankeyMATIC to generate and excel/word to add cells (sorry don’t know how to do otherwise)

Therapy is your profession? That is crazy return on application (just made up that metric).

Haha no I mean do personal therapy and you’ll get better at self validating and reaching for things you didn’t think you could do 😅

Congrats, mate! Few people have that level of employability.

I'm curious though, what made you reject the 75k offer?

26

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8eqdnw wrote

Thanks! Well I’m not just looking for money. I forgot to mention that a few of the jobs were in other states (I standardized all the salaries for my cost of living here). Anyway that one was kind of a dream job but I thought I would lose my mind if I moved to where it was

23 interviews is a pretty brutal rub. Congratulations on taking a big step up.

What are some of the duties you would be performing at your new job?

What are your educational qualifications?

6

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8iv9ak wrote

Some are management/supervisory, some are specialist or coordinator and some are just crew member. I have one completed bachelors and another almost completed but I’m missing the second semester of physics lol

2

StartMaze t1_j8efhqm wrote

Well done! Did you apply to roles where you didn’t meet the requirements?

3

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8ejznz wrote

Sort of. I’m in horticulture and the job descriptions vary a lot, requirements are often flexible, depends on if it’s government, private, nonprofit and I applied to all three. One thing I’m missing is a horticulture degree and some professional development. However I have a ton of work experience in it and a biology degree. So basically what I’ve had to do in resume and interviews is really explicitly detail the techniques and coursework I have under my belt to fill out the lack of hort degree.

I would recommend looking up resume templates/guides, getting professional friends to help you practice interviews and look up common interview questions! I looked on Indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn, and local industry-specific job boards

Edit: Also I feel for you. I’ve been living off cheese bread and credit cards

How long did you normally have to respond to a job offer before declining?

And how do you know whether to go with a job or decline and hope you get a better offer later?

2

Menacingamaranth OP t1_j8uylvv wrote

You ask me like I know the answers to these questions 😅. A lot of them were small businesses so I didn’t have as long to decide as some larger companies give you. I had about a week on average. And I did decide to roll the dice a few times, the $75k job was actually the first one I got offered but I decided to keep looking - I think it’s just a matter of what your goals are and how big a risk you’re willing to take

1

2
