Grammys are awards for making record companies money. Basically nothing to do with musical talent or innovation.

Ya doesn’t Beyoncé not even write her own songs?

She writes 95% of all of her songs .. stop believing in the bullshit that she is another "pop artist". Absolute game changer in terms of style changes, records, complete albums, cultural influence and global appreciation.

Grammy's are a joke. The pool of artists and albums they judge are about 0.01% of all music made each year. It's basically an award that Sony, Universal, and Warner give themselves for convincing the world for yet another year that their favourite "musicians" had anything to do with the music released in their name.

Sadly, true

To some degree every band has a producer and sound engineer, but my honest belief is that if you look at the catalog of say Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, etc, etc, that most of the songs were written and produced with no input at all from the people who eventually perform the music as their own.

Everyone knows this but we somehow can't talk about the fact that the "musicians" who are promoted in the mass media don't make their own music, they are given tracks and assigned songs based on brand fit.

And in case anyone things I am sounding like some conspiracy theorist, look up just Dr. Luke and Max Martin and see their discography, the two single handily made all pop music from 2000 to 2020.

adirtybubble t1_j8obvxi wrote

Taylor swift is a writer on all of her songs. I’m not even a fan of hers but you are seriously exaggerating and picked bad examples of artists to chose. Saying they had no input at all is just insanely in accurate.

You are right about about Luke and Martin being extremely prolific pop writers who have worked with a ton of huge names .

> "musicians" who are promoted in the mass media don't make their own music, they are given tracks and assigned songs based on brand fit.

This is generally true (although variably so from artist to artist). However, I get annoyed that people act like this is a bad thing. Are we mad at the New York Philharmonic because they don't compose the music they perform? Of course not. Now of course, there's a greater level of transparency there, but who cares? Who cares if Bruno Mars writes his own music? He performs it well, and I like it. All there is to it.

And that certainly doesn't make them not musicians, so I take umbridge with your quotes.

Csherman92 t1_j8pp1r6 wrote

All of Taylor Swift's music, has all been written by her. Taylor Swift has written or cowritten every song she has ever won a grammy for. You don't have to like her, but do NOT put her in the same camp as people who don't write their own songs.

heliosparrow t1_j8tr9dl wrote

Fair enough, there are exceptions - I don't think the short comment was meant to imply "always and 100%.“ It's not every Grammy. An accomplished musician like Pat Metheny has been nominated 38 times. He's also won 10 Grammys in the jazz categories - these are rarely televised though! So, probably we could distinguish between the top, televised awards, and those lesser seen or known. It was brilliant to see Bonnie Raitt recently win for song of the year - which upset a lot of people.

He won a bunch for Jazz Solo and for Group Performance, so he racked up a bunch just by virtue of continuously working and being involved in stuff. Grammy Jazz voters are very safe, so as a known quantity he probably won a lot off name-recognition alone. Not discounting him at all, Chuck is an inspiration to me and one of the all-time greats. But yeah, if he were still around he’d probably dismiss most of his wins too.

The secret to success in jazz is to just keep producing content. You’re bound to eventually have something stick, and then you get to play on everyone else’s albums too because your name means something.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_Corea_discography

Not to diminish Chick’s accomplishments though. He, and his contemporaries like Herbie Hancock, invented new forms of jazz fusion.

I think it's a commentary on how barren Popular music has become that one person can collect 32 Grammys from one General style of music. Back in the day (yes, I'm gonna go there,) there was enough talent to go around that a broader section of musicians could receive a Grammy award. Today, you have the usual suspects who come up on stage year after year, voice cracking, tears welling, teeth as white as a doctors lab coat, claiming..."I can't believe it...oh wow!"

But some of us...aren't fooled.

I know, that's my point, the Grammy Committee (or whatever it's called) doesn't seem to know there are a lot of really good musicians out there other than the usual gang and especially more than just Beyoncé. The back-patting has grown exponentially since around 40 -30 years ago.
