I would use a better alternating color scheme, so it's easier to tell neighbors apart, or put the names on the other side of 'the x-axis', next to their respective peaks, so that way your eyes don't have to skip from right to left when reading the whole image, including the text

It looks as if Canada has about 1/5th the population of China. It seems this is a logarithmic scale, which does not make sense.

simple 2d would have been much easier to understand than 3d...portions of the graph are occluded (e.g. Italy).
