8 months after starting my last job I received two emails rejecting my application. 10+ month response time.

I got rejected several years after applying, a few times. Yeah, I wasn’t hanging around waiting for you to hire me all that time.

Jazzlike-Emu-9235 t1_j9ch0zl wrote

It's so rude and disrespectful to me. Like I don't care if it's clearly a general notification. But like give me the courtesy of at least telling me. It doesn't make the company look good to me but I wouldn't feel that way if they just were honest

riptydeco t1_j9c6l45 wrote

The blame goes both ways. Companies are less responsive, but they are also wading through a mountain of bullshit. I’d wager that 95% of applicants for any given position at a large company have no business applying. And I don’t mean that like “there are clearly going to be better candidates”, but “you have literally none of the skills or experience stated for the position”.

Alekillo10 t1_j9caphe wrote

Back when I was looking for GD interns for my small business, I specifically asked for students, I had people that had been in the field for 30 years coming to me and demanding for a paid internship position🤣

DoeCommaJohn t1_j9cm5rk wrote

Umm, actually, the corporations keep saying there is a worker shortage and young people don’t want to work, so clearly they are not receiving lots of applications.

The other problem is that there are some companies that treat the requirements as a wishlist and not a minimum, and expect applicants below that to apply.

3

_Cabbage_Corp_ t1_j9cqpty wrote

Still no excuse. Any semi-competent company that is receiving that number of applications should have some sort of application to handle them. Don't meet qualifications? Either auto-reject based on information supplied, or a human hits reject. Either way, it should be able to send out a generic "form" email to the address that applied.

Literally would take no more effort than a mouse click. No excuse to not get one other than it being a shitty company.

0

LowKeyLoki1998 t1_j9by7ct wrote

It sucks, but that's just how it is. Companies churn through hundreds to thousands of applicants even with ATS.

3

SFHalfling t1_j9c6xb6 wrote

Which is no excuse as the same system should let them auto reply a generic no thanks good luck in the future message to everyone they don't invite to interview.

Buddyroll, this is the way it works now. I was recently laid off, but I could see it coming and have been looking for a new job for maybe 6 months. One place put me through 2 rounds of phone interviews and about 4 hours of in-person interviews over the course of a day. Thought I did pretty well. Never even got a "thanks, but no thanks".

Another place I'm interviewing with right now has already put me through 3 rounds of interviews with the last one being almost 3 weeks ago, despite being contacted directly by a recruiter, and when I sent them an email checking in to see if I was still being considered, they basically said that yes I was but that the person I spoke to last had other interviews to finish and that there had been scheduling conflicts with the other candidates, so they'd check in with me when they knew whether I'd advanced to the 4th and final round.

I can't even begin to tell you how many applications I've sent out over the past 4 years or so since I've graduated college that have had no response. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Despite many of them having tailored resumes and/or cover letters.

that plus the fact that over half of the employers just had no response whatsoever to the application: proves that most employers don’t give a shit about people on a personal level. the people are just NPC’s in a world the employer thinks they are the MC in.

(sorry, maybe only the gamers will get this)

The_Noremac42 t1_j9eolah wrote

I've heard that it's rare that an actual person even sees the application in the first round of elimination. They're filtered by an algorithm that looks for certain keywords. The old method of submitting a resume and application is basically like playing the lottery these days since you're just a piece of paper and there's nothing that makes you stand out. Your best bet is networking: find friends or friends of friends that work in the industry and get connected through them.

6

bendur83 t1_j9feu2t wrote

This! If your friend or acquaintance recommend you to their employer for a position, you are much more likely to have a real person look over your resume as well as more likely to receive an interview.

It doesn't mean you'll get an offer for the job though, that's still on you.

What do you mean by incomplete? That you stopped after reconsidering or that you messed up? I take it you withdrew yourself from consideration for the withdrawn ones. The ghosted ones are places you’d likely not want to work. So unprofessional. Yeah, it sucks to reject someone, but it’s better than leaving them hanging.

UglyDODO OP t1_j9am7oc wrote

I think that one required some extra written sections and maybe recommendations that at the time I couldn't be bothered to complete.

Not_Cleaver t1_j9ams34 wrote

Fair. Especially for unpaid internships it’s so asinine to require recommendations. Congrats on getting your internship. Hope it’s good and productive work. And may the BS tasks be kept to a minimum.

OP is doing engineering, there’s no way it’s unpaid.

Straight up not accurate. At a private company internship, probably paid, a government internship, nope.

Government engineering internships are definitely paid; if OP is working at a private company he is probably making $20-40/hr

Fire engineer at a place i used to work is unpaid, they follow a permanent employee around for 6 weeks because they can't actually do any work. Civil internship is similar and also unpaid. Engineering internships for local small city government I did was also unpaid. Most don't budget for paying interns and if they do, then the intern got lucky.

What field are you in? Internship experiences can vary so much from field to field and it's interesting to hear about others' experiences. I went to an engineering school, so it was pretty common for people to make a bunch of money designing something and I was initially taken aback to learn that to others an internship means running errands for little to no pay.

the_finest_gibberish t1_j9crwj1 wrote

Seriously. I did 3 applications, 3 interviews, one second round interview, and got accepted by that one.

Of the other two, one ghosted me, and the other rejected me but told me it was because a hiring freeze was rolled out the week after my interview, lol.

I cannot imagine doing 50+ applications and 14 interviews. Ain't nobody got the time or energy for that.

Pevarawho t1_j9deeaz wrote

I'm at least 50+ applications in, and I've only gotten 4 interviews. Two of which rejected me, and one ghosted me. Still waiting for a callback on the 4th. The job market is insane.

Almost same here, I was planning on applying for various internships and did submit my resume for some places but I only really put in the effort for one of them. That place gave me an interview, and a few days later, they told me I was accepted, so I guessed no need to continue the rest lol.

Why is it ghosting after the interview but no answer before one?

Because ghosting implies that the other party initiated a conversation, then abruptly cancelled it. No answer means that there were no initial response.
