Why is only up to 2018? Ranking up until later this year is widely available, no reason to exclude it.

Weird. Also, rankings have been updated every month or two for the entire period. We have maybe 8x as many data points available as have been plotted.

and teams change so much in 4 years. Morocco might’ve been 41 in 2018 but they were 22 coming into this tournament. Totally changes the message of the graph.

Also, semifinalists, not quarterfinalist (Portugal, England, Brasil and Netherlands not in the chart)

This sub is called data is beautiful, not boilerplate ggplot. This belongs more into r/soccer, as the visualization is boring and the data doesn't tell clever story.

stochasticlid t1_izsp42h wrote

Not OP, but what would be a more interesting World Cup related visualization you would have liked to see?

wakinget t1_izt8hgh wrote

Using data from this year would be a start.

zeoNoeN t1_izt80z6 wrote

Anything using real time field position would be awesome, but the data engineering needed to get this data probably makes it unrealistic

stochasticlid t1_j11kn56 wrote

Where would you source this data? Sounds like a huge proprietary data investment

JDDW t1_izrjume wrote

I want to see Morocco win just because they're the last team anyone would've expected to win

randomthad69 t1_izthhd9 wrote

The last team anyone expected to win was the toon squad in space jam

7

Corposjuh t1_izrpd94 wrote

I don't. I think the team deserves it but the fans whistling all game long when the opponent has posession ruins watching the game

ayn_rando t1_izs0nuu wrote

Did you watch the 2010 world cup? Have you heard of vuvuzelas? Dude, give me whistling any time.

Aelhas t1_izt6m0h wrote

As a member of the whistlers gang I was deeply impressed by vuvuzela.

Maniglioneantipanico t1_izs4sw6 wrote

Lol that happens every time. Football hooligans are full of shitheads, no matter the nationality

25

B_Boll t1_izrz3tv wrote

So, the fans support the team? The audacitty!!

12

Corposjuh t1_izrzp3r wrote

Cheering for a team or whistling against a team are two different actions. They are the only team whistling against opponents, really sad.

Saadieman t1_izssk8r wrote

Lmao, go watch golf or something. This is basically like saying, I don't like football because the goalie is allowed to use his hands

Semifinals

Nice data. Interesting to see how Argentina and France have been consistent powerhouses while Croatia and Monaco have had ups and downs

40

halibfrisk t1_izsdmji wrote

Croatia joined FIFA in 1992 - the early low ranking reflects they were new to the ranking system rather than performance.

(Prior to independence in 1991 Croatia was part of Yugoslavia)

snjevka t1_izrz2xp wrote

Croatia has been at war in the first part of this graph, and later is pretty consistent I would say.

0 is actually not at the top of the Y-axis?

I’m sorry, that’s a down vote from me, dataisNOTbeautiful.

wayToGoPotato t1_izs4ai0 wrote

I cannot tell if you’re joking or serious!

1

BastardChicken1 t1_izs4eyh wrote

Dead serious.

There is space above the 0 on the Y-axis. Big no-no. It gives the impression of there being a possibility of going below (literally above in this case) 0.

What the hell happened in Croatia

9

Biggerleg t1_izrj73s wrote

Most of the Balkans were involved in Wars of independence/With eachother during the early 90s.

15

PuttingAround t1_izrjebl wrote

Oh yeah I forgot about that little part of history.

So were they good at soccer before too or?

5

Biggerleg t1_izrk40z wrote

Well the Yugoslavian team that preceded them was pretty decent. They were runners up in the Euros a few times and had some knockout stage appearances in the WC.

18

goxxerjones t1_izrn0wu wrote

What does England look like on there?

6

CyborgBee t1_izrxk1a wrote

Would be on average a little above Croatia (without the massive climb on the right that Croatia had after becoming independent). Nearly always top 20, often top 10, rarely top 5 until recently

5

GoodAndBluts t1_izt3vnv wrote

Looks like this is semifinalists

100PercentChansey t1_izsvlpp wrote

God damn why did Croatia explode in like 1992?

2

Calgar77 t1_izswzl8 wrote

cause they didn't exist as a country before then

3

LarryCraigSmeg t1_iztpp8d wrote

Because they were literally exploding from 1991-1992 (and war continued until 1995)

2

tommytornado t1_izswwqs wrote

Current rankings are 3,4,12 and 22

si1versmith t1_izt3onr wrote

You know your can correct the y axis to say start from 1, not zero

This chart is not beautiful

I'd like to see the 'then rankings' of the 'then SFinalists' for every WC.

Would be fun to see where all lower ranked teams did well kn an average...

TurbanD00med t1_izsog7k wrote

I like the idea, but could do one that uses the football ELO rankings? They tend to be more accurate less random then Fifa's official ones

I don't know how we didn't drop out of the top 12 in 2010 considering we missed the world cup that year.

Given the complete unpredictability of the current championship, this data will hardly help those who place bets with backmakers. I won't be too surprised if Morocco becomes world champion this time.
