This is weird to look at, like... I thought I remembered seeing a Waffle House near me. Maybe I haven't, though.

FEMA uses a metric called The Waffle House Index so inwas sure they were all over the US
DraniKitty t1_j031o9c wrote
Fun fact with Carl's Jr, that's one of those companies that has a different name depending on coast - On the easy coast they go by the name Hardee's! So that map might need a bit of tweaking!
Also depending on which side of the country you're on, you either have Ceckers or Rally's, but they're also the same company with all the same logos and patterns otherwise.
GEAX t1_j031sxq wrote
Then again, it looks like they're concentrated in hurricane areas (as if swept there by high winds)

That's a fair point

DraniKitty t1_j032umo wrote
To be fair, I'm not sure a lot of people in the US realize, either. I've lived on both sides of the country, which is why I know, but most folks don't do a full 3,000 mile move to find out. You're good in not knowing before ~

I was thinking of this. I hope to resurrect my cartogram algorithm early next year, so you could plot points and see the prevalence of certain places relative to population. But then you'd have the opposite problem - sparsely inhabited areas will typically have more establishments per population than a metro area.
eric5014 t1_j0424r0 wrote
I first thought "Oh, just another population map", but then realised these maps illustrate well that many chains are quite regional.
In my part of Australia, Subway and McDonalds are ubiquitous. Haven't seen any of the others except Carl's Jr just turned up last year.
IndependentCharming7 t1_j042q4e wrote
In that case great job on including Waffle House!

My favorite part about the McDonald’s map is the distance between them in South Dakota. There’s a billboard in Rapid City that reads “Last McDonald’s for 200 miles” (or so). Makes me giggle.

I find this more interesting than the last one I saw. I compared what we had locally to the 9 fast food restaurants it showed.
If I do that with this one, in my small city I have
- 4 Subways
- 1 McDonalds
- 0 Dunkin Donuts
- 0 Sonic's
- 0 Chick-Fil-As
- 1 Jack in the Box
- 0 Waffle Houses
- 0 Five Guys'
- and 2 Carl's Jrs.
The last one I was missing a few, but the distribution wasn't that far off from the national distribution. This time I'm fairly far from the national distribution, comparatively.

Waffle House is intrinsically linked to Southern culture and food. It was founded and Headquartered in the metro Atlanta area. Cracker Barrel is also a Southern staple and is where all church goers eat Brunch on Sunday (and not tip their servers)

Multi-brand companies usually focus group that choice at a minimum, because of the many bad stories of clueless multi-nationals in the 1960s and 1970s. The most famous example is probably when Chevrolet tried to sell its “Nova” model in Mexico, which failed badly because “no va” in Spanish means “(you) do not go.”
Is there a potentially similar sounding word in Arabic to “Carl’s” that they might want to avoid associating with?
thatbvg t1_j07pzb2 wrote
True. I have no idea as I don’t speak Arabic but maybe you’re correct. I remember Mitsubishi launched the Pajero in Spain and they didn’t sell any because it’s not a very nice word in Spanish.
