Lobster used to be backwater food for poor dockworkers. In some places it still is common fare.

Kiltymchaggismuncher t1_jac398j wrote

A lot of seafood did. Oysters were cheap, and the rich wouldn't consider eating them. Same with eels.

As soon as something becomes more expensive, it is a delicacy that the upper classes want to have.

White bread was another example, since it required extra processing. For much of their history, the poor had a better balanced diet than the rich. Even when a food is relatively cheap to produce, crazes like "superfoods" will drive the price up. Quiona is a good example. Its a cheap staple for many in south America. But the price has exploded in recent years. Certainly good for farmers and those associated with the industry, but not great for those at the bottom of society

When I was working in the restaurant, there was one year that the iceberg lettuce crop was severely damaged (I think from cold, but I don't remember) the price of iceberg shot through the roof, and suddenly it was a delicacy being served by high end restaurants. They would literally serve a quarter head of iceberg with some blue cheese dressing as an appetizer for like 15 bucks. Once the price dropped again, it went back to being a "cheap food" for diners.

Kiltymchaggismuncher t1_jaetrnr wrote

I remember that period, though i wasn't aware restaurants tried to mark it as upmarket.

They were fed to prisoners during colonial times

1

LeaperLeperLemur t1_jadf0oc wrote

It was considered cruel to serve prisoners lobster too often.

Though to be fair, it was served with the meat and shell all crushed up together and likely without salt/butter/lemon/etc.

2

emilycecilia t1_jadkc92 wrote

Yeah, that's the bit people forget when they say "lobster was served to prisoners!" The entire lobster, shell and all, ground into goop. They weren't eating lobster tails with drawn butter and herbs!

2

quirkycurlygirly t1_jackt7d wrote

It's like you typically see mashed potatoes with lobster or maybe gourmet mac n cheese, with steamed vegetables. But instead it's inexpensive mac n cheese from a box. So it's totally unexpected.

It’s a bait post. They intentionally paired lobster with Craft Mac and Cheese because they knew this would be the response.

Has it gotten better again? Because the KD of yesteryear was good, then they made some changes and it was not good anymore. I’ve been an Annie’s convert ever since, though I do admit the sharp cheddar KD slaps.

2

dejus t1_jadbikb wrote

Strange days when KD falls below Annie’s. Maybe it’s changed over time as well as I don’t recall ever having it and thinking it was that good. Always fell short.

4

shellybearcat t1_jadbks7 wrote

Have you tried the extra cheesy Annie’s?????? My grocery store doesn’t carry it but Target does. It’s basically their normal cheddar Mac and cheese but with an extra big cheese packet haha it’s so simple but so brilliant

Never tried it, but I read a ton of reviews saying Walmart GV is way better. I’m still skeptical on that one.

4

ambermae513 t1_jad0m20 wrote

It is and I will die on that hill! Individually they both seem fine. But side by side there is a huge difference in cheesiness, creaminess, and noodle texture. Kraft comes off downright watery next to GV.

4

boardmonkey t1_jad4ewj wrote

I grew up on Aldi brand, and that shit is top notch. Better noodle structure, better cheese flavor. Kraft used to be good, but they have really cut quality over time.

6

ambermae513 t1_jadb1vg wrote

I like Aldi brand as well. Now I want to do a side by side comparison between that and GV.

4

Butthole_Surprise17 t1_jadeb4m wrote

Had some Kraft M&C recently and it was bland as all hell. Also, you can never get the pasta to be al dente. Annie's and Aldi brand FTW.

I have also read reviews like that, but I still haven’t tried the Walmart kind.

Reminds me of the time my family and I went to this seafood buffet and paid $80 per head. They served lobsters, oysters, crabs, and a lot more, but they served my sister Kraft mac and cheese when she ordered mac and cheese. We were expecting better for a buffet that we paid $80 per person, like we paid about $320 just to be served Kraft mac and cheese. Place is “Boston Lobster Feast” if anyone is wondering, there’s a few locations in Orlando, Florida.
