My baby moms is cracking up right now about the fire department. Have you tested your smoke detectors.

it started beeping on its own last week and has since stopped. i'm assuming it was doing a test run and it's all good.

When I was three the house next door burned down and one of my neighbors kids died, so I take fire safety seriously. Some times they beep when the battery is really low. Have you pressed the button and make sure the battery still has juice?

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9r9gf3 wrote

i was making a joke about the battery being low. everything is working fine here. just got carbon monoxide detectors a couple of weeks ago also.

Did you use butter on the bread?

6

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9pdpox wrote

yes but i was doing like 3 things at the same time and it got away from me. i don't mind though.

ThorwAwaySlut t1_j9q0oqi wrote

Lol when I overcook it I turn that side down on the plate so I can at least try and fool myself it's not burnt. Don't listen to the haters. What's a grilled cheese if you haven't burnt one side haha

6

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9q209h wrote

the other side is was the same. i typically start with a cold pan but i let it go too long cuz i was distracted. when i did the flip the pan was wicked hot and just char fucked it on that side too. not the first time and won't be the last.

No no, I'm not judging. I was just going to suggest trying mayo if you never have. In my experience, it takes longer to burn, making the bread crisper but less burnt.

Even if your sammich was perfect, I would have suggested it.

Enjoy!

Sandylyon t1_j9pnedu wrote

I saw a housemate doing this with mayo and I thought he was cracked. Is it actually good?

What kind of mayo and butter did you use?

1

simplymandee t1_j9r33rc wrote

Hellmans. And butter gaylea typically.

3

MushroomLonely2784 t1_j9r3pa5 wrote

Interesting. Well, I've never noticed a difference in taste 😅

I've even served grilled cheese to folks who claim to hate mayo, and they've never said boo.

2

simplymandee t1_j9r6ym7 wrote

I like mayo which is weird lmao I don’t like it for grilled cheese haha

3

MushroomLonely2784 t1_j9r7l68 wrote

That is odd, lol. But to each their own!

I made grilled cheese with mayo tonight. It was delicious, and I did not notice a difference. 2 year old cheddar, bacon, Doritos, fried up nice and crunchy. Everything I hoped it would be

3

nearlysentient t1_j9prasz wrote

Yes, it is magical, but use very little. I love mayo on most stuff, but for this application just spread some on and scrape most of it off. Maybe add a sprinkle of grated parmesan and you have a tasty, crunchy sammich.

1

Dirt_E_Harry t1_j9pfpxm wrote

Next time put the Doritos inside of the sammich for extra crunch.

But that bread; definitely overdone.

well, i got a 3 day ban from the grilled cheese sub for posting a salami grilled cheese w/ chicago style giardiniera. a mod commented "you have 20min to tell me why this is a grilled cheese and not a melt" and i responded "your mom's a grilled cheese" and the post was removed. so, your correction is wrong.

Sun_Beams t1_j9q4rk8 wrote

I approved this and I have to say, I know who that is and man that's exactly the sort of thing they would do.

Feel free to post this stuff here and maybe try low and slow, it helps stave off the char. Also warming the meats prior helps as well.

4

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9q5sah wrote

yeah, sometimes i'll fry the meat first, especially with salami, and then proceed as normal.

my usually technique is to start with a cold pan and cover. when the pan side is done everything else is warmed through and then i add the top bread and flip til that's done. usually works out but this time...was this time.

still tasty though.

3

Sun_Beams t1_j9q646i wrote

Ah the grilled cheese gods just didn't favour you this time. Well there's always the next time!

A bit of char isn't too bad at least.

everyone’s whining about the bread but no one’s discussing the American “cheese”? Smh

1

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9pzjn2 wrote

american cheese from the deli is a very different animal than the kraft singles in the plastic sleeves.

its basically just unaged cheddar.

5

nightwind44 t1_j9pzvxu wrote

That’s fair. It’s hard to get worse than Kraft singles.

BUT! To compare it to cheddar goes too far. Cheddar is better and I will die on this hill

1

Organic-Activity8762 OP t1_j9q1crb wrote

yeah, well its not even american. the practice started in switzerland prior to WWII and americans adopted it.

4

ellemen0 t1_j9r3z72 wrote

So, I am a firm believer that american cheese MUST be in a grilled cheese sandwich. If you typically use other cheeses, absolutely still do so, but the next time you make a grilled cheese with cheddar try two slices of cheddar with ONE slice of american in between them. It melts beautifully and adds a creamier texture that cheddar simply cannot give. It will add something special in the middle. I seriously can't recommend this strongly enough, it could change your life >.>
