I hate to be the one who goes against you all, but I can't stand Brussels. They're so bitter to me. Also I can't stand onions unless they've been fried a lot, there's a strange after taste they have. Interestingly after covid it got worse, and some other veggies and fruits also give this strange aftertaste.

KW_ExpatEgg t1_je4lkr5 wrote

How long has it been since you’ve tried a Brussel sprout?

They have literally been reengineered to remove bitterness, so you might be able to like them now if it’s been a while.

I grew up hating them, until I realised they didn't have to be boiled until they were practically mush!

Brussel Sprouts are weird because I totally love them but I can absolutely understand why some people hate them. Although if the haters had them prepared like this they might be singing a different tune

Tri734 OP t1_je1yr3t wrote

I hated them when I was a kid bc my mom always overcooked them and they were mushy… but sautéed or in the air fryer is where it’s at! 🤌🏻

Brussel sprouts have been made to taste better via selective breeding over the last couple decades

True, but it also helps when the texture isn’t made to be completely bleh by overcooking them. :)

I have to ask though since you’ve had experience cooking them in the air fryer… what is your experience like baking them?

I brush olive or peanut oil on them then season with garlic salt and black pepper. I put the temp pretty high to brown the outside and keep the middle slightly tougher so it’s not mushy. I’ve never done the air fryer though and I’m left wondering whether that is just the superior method. Should I air fry them over baking?

Tri734 OP t1_je77vh5 wrote

I baked them in the oven for years before I got an air fryer. Basically the same process. :) I season mine the same way… 400° for 8ish minutes and then good to go.

taint-juice t1_je78cd5 wrote

Thank you so much! I’ll give that a go. My air fryer sits in the cabinet and I just forget to use it. This will be a good reason for me to remember to use it next time.

Also good if you cook that in a cast iron with chicken thighs skin side down at first then flip them half way through. Perfect meal if you want a little more protein.
