Wow! That's impressive. The presentation is so... crisp and clean. Unagi too! Love how loaded the miso is - something so satisfying about slurping up that seaweed.

Thank you for your kind words of commpliment. I really like seaweed, so I added extra seaweed and also baby clams into the soup.

Here that would be like $175 :(

BMWer2016 OP t1_isnqmeu wrote

It's expensive here too. My boyfriend and I have planned to go to a local sushi restaurant to eat sushi boat to celebrate our anniversary next month. The price for the boat alone isn't cheap so I decided to practice at home. I spent over $40 for sushi grade king salmon, yellowtail tuna, BBQ eel and tamagoyaki. After my first attempt of making this, we both decided we're going to save that money for king crab and make our own sashimi, nigiri and sushi.

hannahmanaman t1_isp9i7i wrote

I have started doing this too! Simple California rolls at the sushi place I used to go to are just over $10 now (Cheapest roll just for scale) which is insane. Luckily we have a decent Japanese market nearby with decently priced blocks of fish. Its not too difficult, I just need practice with my Nigiri / Sashimi slicing. It never looks quite right.

BMWer2016 OP t1_isrpkng wrote

Yay!!! I'm glad to hear you also have been making homemade sushi, sashimi, rolls etc. I can't agree more with you about how much they charged now at sushi track restaurant for simple rolls filled with a lot of rice and less fish.

I’ve never seen edamame shelled like that for serving. Does it make them more difficult to eat?

8

BMWer2016 OP t1_isny3e0 wrote

I bought it from Trader Joe's. It's bit tricky to eat with chopsticks but it is fun and good way to slow down our dinner while having a good conversation about different types of cuisine.

FloptimasPloptimas t1_isnzfkt wrote

Someone downvoted you for your answer. 🥲 I upvoted you, because that is weird.

As far as the edamame goes, I think I will stick with steamed in the pod with sea salt. Satisfying sucking them out.

Thank you for your kind words of compliment. I totally agree with you on adding baby clams into miso bowl. My first miso soup without clams was really good until I've stumbled across someone's post on a blog about adding baby clams into miso soup. I've never looked back!

Sugoi! I see you have some nigori to go along with dinner. Kudos on your tamago, (egg) I’ve never been able to roll/flatten it well enough. Finally, your photo is fantastic, too!

2

BMWer2016 OP t1_isrre23 wrote

Thank you very much. Honestly I didn't make tamagoyaki although I've saved a good recipe, I didn't have the pan to make it. I was so happy to see it in my local Japanese store. They made them very tasty and not too sweet like the one I have had at some sushi places.

2

kenjinyc t1_isrs2vt wrote

Aha! I’m half Japanese and I was born in Tokyo but it doesn’t mean a thing when it comes to making those eggs. Anyway, it doesn’t matter your presentation still makes me hungry!

2

BMWer2016 OP t1_isrwcd8 wrote

Ugh, I know rolling those eggs isn't easy. It sounds more difficult after reading your followed up comment :). But I still want to buy a pan and try to make it at home after I move in with my boyfriend.

2

Good luck! I bought the little rectangular pan and it’s still difficult. I myself and moving into a new apartment too so I’m going to try again. If I succeed I will post here!

1

Thank you. It is King aka Chinook salmon. My most favorite in all types of wild salmon due to its delicate sweet, very rich and the melt-in-your-mouth taste.

2

Shoddy-Indication798 t1_israw8e wrote

I didn't know salmon could be eating raw because of worms. I thought it had to be at least cured somehow with some sake or something.

2

BMWer2016 OP t1_isrvyoe wrote

I think the salmon has been caught fresh, bled, and gutted upon capture, then immediately frozen in ice, which kills any harmful parasites; thus, making it safe for raw consumption.

Ooof 🤫. Luckily I didn't stick my chopsticks in that sushi rice lol.

In all seriousness though, in my culture, sticking chopsticks vertical in a bowl of rice is bad a. It is incredibly taboo because it reminds our people of funerals, where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks standing vertically in the center.
