It's expensive here too. My boyfriend and I have planned to go to a local sushi restaurant to eat sushi boat to celebrate our anniversary next month. The price for the boat alone isn't cheap so I decided to practice at home. I spent over $40 for sushi grade king salmon, yellowtail tuna, BBQ eel and tamagoyaki. After my first attempt of making this, we both decided we're going to save that money for king crab and make our own sashimi, nigiri and sushi.

I bought it from Trader Joe's. It's bit tricky to eat with chopsticks but it is fun and good way to slow down our dinner while having a good conversation about different types of cuisine.

As far as the edamame goes, I think I will stick with steamed in the pod with sea salt. Satisfying sucking them out.

I have started doing this too! Simple California rolls at the sushi place I used to go to are just over $10 now (Cheapest roll just for scale) which is insane. Luckily we have a decent Japanese market nearby with decently priced blocks of fish. Its not too difficult, I just need practice with my Nigiri / Sashimi slicing. It never looks quite right.

Ooof π€«. Luckily I didn't stick my chopsticks in that sushi rice lol.
In all seriousness though, in my culture, sticking chopsticks vertical in a bowl of rice is bad a. It is incredibly taboo becauseΒ it reminds our people of funerals, where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks standing vertically in the center.

I think the salmon has been caught fresh, bled, and gutted upon capture, then immediately frozen in ice, which kills any harmful parasites; thus, making it safe for raw consumption.
