Yeah, but cranberries is probably the best easily available alternative. Lingonberries can be hard to find outside Sweden, Finland and Norway

Like many redditors, The nearest Whole foods and and IKEA are several hours drive from where I live. (Don't feel too sorry for me, thank FSM there's a Wegmans on the other side of town, and they have lingonberry jam. In fact ther's some in my fridge right now.)

I got spoiled by the 99th Wegmans they opened up in Virginia Beach. Then we moved an hour north to Williamsburg. I love that we have a Publix up here… but I'd definitely trade access to IKEA and Whole Foods to have a Wegmans closer - in a heartbeat. Their prepared foods are way outside my budget, but they have SO much awesome stuff, and produce and cheeses I can't get anywhere else, along with some FANTASTIC house brand frozen foods… lots of amazing stuff that's hard to find anywhere else :)

I made Swedish meatballs this week with the lingonberry spread from Ikea. They are almost identical in flavor to cranberries, so I don't think you're missing anything subbing a cranberry sauce

I'm a fan of the mushy overcooked broccoli and cauliflower. Only reason I don't cook it like that is because I've read it has a lot less nutrients

Yeah this looks pretty close to the traditional stuff. Obviously every single family has a slightly different recipe, but some minor things (frying in olive oil, Worcestershire sauce in the brown sauce etc etc) isn't what my family did. All in all this will get you really close.

The only thing I will say is that the recipe says that swelling the breadcrumbs in milk is optional, but I'd definitely say that you should do that

Seems alright. Personally I wouldn't simmer the meatballs in the sauce like that, but instead pour the sauce on top after plating. Web search for Swedish recipes and translate if you wanna be extra tryhard. (AAS)

Looks decent. Things that stand out to me: Allspice and nutmeg aren't very common in meatballs, maybe around Christmas, but only then. That, and don't use olive oil. Either only butter, or a more neutral oil. Most importantly, don't cook the meatballs in the sauce (huge no no). Could also add some pressgurka:)

But honestly, make them just how you like them. The most popular way of eating them here in Sweden is buying frozen ones at the store and eating them with pasta and ketchup

Never had a homemade version but Ikea's is pretty good if you ask me. Reasonably priced too. If it wasn't an hour drive from my house I'd eat there more often.

Ikea is to meatballs what McDonald's is to hamburgers. It's aight, and it definitely hits a certain spot, but it's nothing compared to the real thing.

If you've been dragged through the showroom and sat on and touched every piece of furniture for two hours the IKEA cafeteria is great. Once done then you get to go to the lower floor and browse all the other stuff you don't need. Then you need two/three hotdogs and an ice cream after checking out. IKEA is an amusement park.

almost nothing in IKEA are actually made in Sweden, foodmarket usually got some candy and a very few food items, all the rest is from elsewhere in world.

I used to take my kids to Ikea to hang out and have dinner at their cafeteria. They loved to play in all the different display setups. I know it's weird, but they had fun and I have some good memories of those times.

I think I only eat cranberry sauce with moose roast. Serve it with garlic butter sautéed carrots, boiled potatoes, and gravy.... don't get much better than that!

Where I live the next Ikea is 1,345 km away.

We're by no means a small town though, and I think some of the more specialised grocery stores in the city centre have them, but I couldn't be arsed driving the 30min there. So Coles cranberries are just fine 👌
