Some places link them together and you have to use a special coin or a £1 to remove one. She might not have had any cash. We often use debit cards instead.

You drop the coin in the handle, then can disconnect it from the others and use. At the end of shopping you connect the cart to others and get the coin back.

Ahh okay. Suppose deterring people from stealing all the carts. Getting the money back makes sense
