Its gluten free ingredients but they don't have a separate prep area, and can't guarantee no cross contamination.

They can’t guarantee there’s been no cross contamination so they have to put that

Glutenless in the same way stainless steel means it stains less than regular steel, not that it doesn’t stain at all.

This makes perfect sense. Imagine a peanut allergy. You can have a dish with no peanuts but if your kitchen has any peanuts in it, you can't guarantee any dish as peanut-free.

Making a gluten free food was always a pain in the kitchen, but I always felt bad for those poor souls who can't enjoy bread.

I eat at firehouse and have yet to have a problem. As with many sub shops you can see them make it and ensure they take basic precautions; also they use boars head meats, so no fillers (possibly wheat) onthe slicer

I thought their honesty about the size of their rolls was interesting, that they couldn’t guarantee they’d be 7 or 8 inches so they just put both in!

So why would anyone pay 2.75 dollars for that?

I worked in a restaurant that had gluten free options. The cooks had to change their gloves and use completely new cookware and utensils etc to guarantee it was gluten free. Most places won’t do that tho. The only reason we did is because the owner’s daughter had celiac so she took it super seriously.

Maybe not, but I suppose it’s helpful when it comes to being snotty on the Internet. I was merely pointing out that the pricing you’re leaning on is abnormal, but clearly you’d avoid this at any price.

Yep exactly this. I work at a pizza shop and we offer a gluten free crust but there is so much flour everywhere we absolutely cannot guarantee no cross contamination and have that printed on our menu and also tell people that when they order.

Apparently some meat processors add gluten to deli meats for flavor and preservation so while the bread could be gluten free the meat be like heck no

It saps the enjoyment out of food and dining experiences

It's nice that the education on cross-contamination is improving, but unless a restaurant has a dedicated prep area for it, it's rolling the dice with every order.

My friend and I went out to brunch with a person who has celiac disease. We had to go to 3 restaurants before we found one with food that she could eat. We already had a reservation at a restaurant that said they could accommodate her over the phone, but that wasn’t the case when we got there. We were already seated and had to leave. My friend was surprised that I wasn’t annoyed with the whole situation but I figured it’s more frustrating and annoying for the person who has celiac.

Fire house subs if you are celiac tell them in Flagstaff they wipe counter. They even put a knife in the bag for you to cut it.

It’s a gluten free bun, but that’s it. The kitchen is not gluten free, nor is the prep area.

The bread is gluten free not necessarily the rest of the sandwich

The real hook and ladder is the price. So expensive for what you get. Jersey mikes is similar price but way more and better. Subway is garbage but is priced like garbage. Firehouse is average at best but has the nerve to charge 80 bucks for a family of four to have a so so sized sandwich with a bag of chips. Ugh
