I’m sorry, who?

I don't understand this line of thinking. Why does it matter whether you've heard of them or not? Are you only interested in products from big corporations that have massive marketing budgets?

I looked at it and it didn’t seem like a Microsoft product. I thought I read Microsoft, then I looked closer at the company name. Didn’t realize Mycroft was a thing.

Just had to do a double take when I saw the name. Is this something you’re involved with? You seem really invested.

There's a huge desire in the serious home automation world (read not people who have alexa and a smart light) to move away from Google and Amazon when it comes to voice assistance. Its an outrageously difficult task, but Mycroft are a player in that game.

volleydez t1_it7rwrq wrote

Cool! Agree that we def need somebody to do it, google kills products on a whim if they don’t make money and Amazon has its own set of problems

Yep! I am pretty excited for some kind of smart speaker which doesn't sell your data in a heartbeat

Yepp.Does anyone remember Snips, another very interesting candidate bought by Sonos?

I didn't make the connection with Microsoft. I see the resemblance now, M'cro...ft. I thought you were saying "I haven't heard of this company, so why should I care about this?" My mistake.

I'm not even a backer of this project. A bit out of my budget. Just thought it was cool, so I've been following their blog. Also I'm a fan of open source software and hardware. And like the other person said, they're the first real privacy-respecting alternative to the Amazon Echo.

Fair enough! I figured it was a misunderstanding, sorry for being unclear initially

I know one of the founders of this company personally. It’s legit.

It’s a smart speaker like Alexa but issues open-source code and much more secure.

Could really do with a better looking design. It looks like someones first design on their new 3d printer.

Open source smart assistant is a really cool endeavor though.

It’s a great idea, I just don’t see the masses trading “convenience” (a subjective thing) and design for this thing in the numbers needed to make a dent.

1

YAOMTC OP t1_itehy2f wrote

I'm assuming they're not that concerned with being a major contender in the market, or a driver of big change in the world. As long as they sell enough, make enough profit to satisfy their relatively small number of investors, and are making the best open source smart speaker they can, they should be satisfied with that. They offer an alternative, and that can be good enough to bring them moderate success.

jb_in_jpn t1_itewdmq wrote

That’s a good point. I’m maybe a bit surprised at the design of anything - it subjective, yes - it just doesn’t look like it’s going to be especially competitive on that front

This goes at least as far back as its Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns where it raised $390K and $394K respectively starting in Jan-Feb 2018.

I have no connection to these guys, I didn't even back either of those campaigns. Just thought it was neat. Apparently I'm a shill for mentioning how this project got off the ground. 🤷

Kickstarter is a platform for scams.

I backed Shovel Knight and 3d printed minis on KS, I got both of those plus helped launch those companies which have continued to make products. It's a bit like saying the internet is full of scams, yes it is, but if you know how to avoid them you need not fear.

tom4ick t1_it8kgfn wrote

I backed a few products there, from fountain pens to books, and most of them were Chinese stuff that I found on Aliexpress after. I would suggest backing anything on kickstarter unfortunately

Beznia t1_it8t43a wrote

Manufacturers in China actually look at Kickstarter campaigns for ideas. Stuff like the Fidget Cube was ripped off and manufactured en masse in China and shipped to the US before the legitimate Fidget Cube was able to finish their kickstarter campaign and ship units.

tom4ick t1_it8v8vj wrote

No no, I mean the exact same product, just rebranded for kisckstarter.

Kickstarter is investing in a startup. It's not a pre-order platform. You may be using it incorrectly.

As I’m saying, most of the things there are a scam.
